Hi all,

I'm thinking of trying Cosequin for my cat, Turtle, and wondered if you can give the pill or if you have to sprinkle it on the food. She doesn't have really bad symptoms yet--just a little hesitant about jumping on the bed and a few other things. The vet said I could try a shot they offer for this (forgot what it's called) and that I'd have to learn how to give it to her at home. It's not inexpensive. And even though giving this shot is supposed to be no big deal, it would be a big deal to me! Without her having any more symptoms than she does I wanted to go a simpler route by buying this OTC to see if it helps. Turtle is almost 12 years old and I'm not even sure if it is arthritis related. The vet seems to think it probably is some in her back but she wasn't even sure.

I'd really love any advice or experience with this!

Turtle and I thank you!!

Pam

You mix it into the food - it is flavored...
I rather give Hyaluronic Acid though... I give This one to Gracie and Bugsy: http://www.trixsyn.com/
I buy the one for Extra large dogs and give the proportional dose for cats, so it lasts and lasts... Doing this the dose for cats (out of the x-large dogs) is 0.55cc 2x a day.
It has almost no taste (salty water) and I mix it to the wet food)

Hi Carolina,

Turtle normally eats dry food. I can get her to eat some canned food if she hasn't eaten any in a long time but I don't know that I could get her to eat it daily. That was why I asked if you could just give the capsule as-is rather than sprinkling the powder that's in the capsule on the food. (I posted that question on Petco's site about five days ago and it hasn't been answered.)

With the liquid Hyaluronic Acid that you use, you give .55 CC's twice a day. Is that weight-based or just the amount you would give cats? Do you buy the extra large dog one rather than the one for cats because it's less expensive per dose or just lasts longer before you have to buy it again?

Sorry for all the questions!!

You can give the capsules too... For the hyaluronic acid I posted, 0.55cc is the equivalent dosage for cats when you give the x-large dogs one. It is MUCH cheaper that way (lasting MUCH longer), and you get the same amount of HA. That brand is great... You can give it by mouth with the syringe, easier than giving a capsule - it is a tiny amount and it doesn't taste bad at all.

We used to mix it in to plain meat baby food for Callie. Just about a teaspoon, warmed up a bit then stir in the contents of the capsule.
