Suggestion - Lock Ancient Threads

Thread Starter
Not sure if this version of the forum software permits it, but I would recommend locking threads that are over say three years old.

Otherwise, new members may search and inadvertently bump a thread that's bordering on internet pre-history. Just had one bumped that was from 2006 for example with naturally broken links on it and members that aren't even on the forum anymore to respond.

And even if its the same subject matter, I see no harm in creating a new thread of the subject hadn't been broached in the last five years.

On the small forum I moderate, we lock threads after 3 months. I think that's plenty of time. . .if nobody has anything to say on the subject for that long, no reason to drag it up again. I hate it when some spammer dredges up an old thread and gets everyone going about a sick cat who was sick 5 years ago and has certainly either died or recovered by now (for example). I would support it.

Possible problem: on my small forum, we have to lock the old threads manually. On a large forum like this, that would be extremely time-consuming and tedious. So if they don't have an auto-lock feature, I wouldn't expect that of our admins/moderators, who already have enough to do.

I've just re-checked, and we don't have that option. If somebody dredges up an ancient thread, members can report it so that a mod can split it, i.e., use the latest post to start a new thread and lock the old. That's been done a number of times.
