Any name ideas?

How about Coal as in charcoal or Licquorice (sp) as in the black taffy candy. Of course there is that old stand-by for black cats, Pepper. He is very handsome.

Taryn - I'm guessing that you haven't been around any or many de-clawed cats.

I have three.
They all love to use the scratcher pad, the poles made of rope on the cat tree, sometimes boxes, etc. This is not unusual.

If we have a dog guest in the house, I am overly cautious because they don't have some of their defense system intact. Leaving the back claws longer is helpful for defense if needed - and for climbing.

You may recall the declawed cat chasing a bear away - http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...-cat-bear.html

On June 4 a black bear wandered into a West Milford, New Jersey, back yard, was confronted by a 15-pound (7-kilogram) tabby cat … and fled up a neighbor's tree. Hissing at the base of the tree, Jack the clawless cat kept the bear at bay for about 15 minutes, then ran him up another tree after an attempted escape. ...
Now, anyone who allows their declawed cat outside is, IMHO, crazy, but I guess there are a lot of crazy cat caregivers. (?)

Our three have never been timid about using their front paws to bat at another cat, or anything - acting just like any other cat would act. They don't have any psychological issues from being declawed. It's me that has them - the huge fear of them getting outside with out all their defenses intact.

Vaccines: Just wondering why are you getting the rabies vaccine if he's going to be an inside cat - I understand why you're wanting the FeLV, but if you no longer have an FeLV cat in the house - perhaps you might want to reconsider that?

Sorry, I guess I'm just one of "those" who am suspicious of all the vaccines given our animals wondering if they may be doing more harm than good, always weighing the benefits vs the possible problems.

I'm also leaning to the thinking of some that believe the need for "boosters" is also overrated.

I'm so glad that you'll investigate more about his previous home situation - I think once you've satisfied yourself about that you'll have no regrets.

Even though I have no regrets in every effort I made to find Buddy's former caretaker - they wouldn't be getting him back even if they paid me. He's getting a special no-grain canned diet, a nice room, all the attention I can give him - and - I sort of think that his previous people wouldn't do all that for him knowing he is FeLV positive, they might even send him to the angels before he is ready. I hope I never have to tell someone he's not being returned to them. Guess all I'd have to do is show them a bill for keeping him plus all the medical stuff and they'd leave us alone?

I love the name you've given him, Sirius Black - and I bet the "Mister" fits him just right.

There are many de-clawed cats in shelters, and from what I hear some do have issues that have been defined as declawing-caused. I'm so happy that you've taken Mr. Black into your home and into your heart, and that you're finding him to be just like any normal cat. That's been my experience, too.

You'll get good lovin' back from Mr. Black, I just know it - our black cat is the one who taught us what real cat-loving is all about.

Gloria - I'm not sure about Taryn but here it is law to get vaccinated for rabies. Holland is strictly indoors and she has to get the vaccine. Sirius is so handsome of course I'm
biased toward black cats. Congratulations on your new addition!

Yeah, if the kitty was microchipped, it might have been an accidental escape rather than abandonment, but I thought shelters always check the chips first before adopting back out, no?

For care of a declawed cat, in my experience they need no special consideration under normal circumstances. They usually don't seem to realize they are declawed, can defend themselves if need be with powerful back claw kicks and teeth, and can usually climb just fine except for vertical climbing posts (but older kitties 12lbs+ usually have an issue with those anyway since it takes a lot of muscle to haul up that much cutie bootie, heh), so I wouldn't worry and I'm sure he'll get along just fine when settled in.

He's definitely a ninja though, that's for sure!

Rabies shots are required by law. Also, the vet said since we still have FeLV outside he should be vaccinated in case he were to get out, as you know FeLV is highly contagious.

The scratching posts are staying and I don't care if he scratches the furniture since he isn't hurting anything. My cat Spaz was declawed, so I have lived with a declawed cat before. Some cat never notice they are missing their claws(Spaz never noticed she was missing her claws) and I'm glad Sirius doesn't seem to miss them either, but I have also seen cats who do miss their claws and their personality is wrecked because of it, they start biting and/or they no longer are willing to use their litter box. I know no special care is required for a declawed cat once they're healed and since he has obviously been declawed for some time I know he doesn't need anything special over what I would do for a clawed cat.

I forgot to add he came to the rescue with a sore on his belly. It is healed but he still has a bald spot. Something happened while he was on his own outside. Poor big guy.

I think Dexter and Sirius will become friends since they already can occupy the couch together. Dexter laid right in front of Sirius on the couch earlier and all was good.

I'm glad we didn't know Sirius was declawed until we got him home, because we might have ruled him out and that would have been a massive loss on our part and Dexter's part. I know it doesn't matter if he does or doesn't have claws, he is who he is and I'm glad we are a part of his life.

As far as his microchip, the rescue doesn't know if they contacted anyone over his chip or not. I'm thinking they did since they knew he was already chipped. They are so full of cats they are bursting at the seams and they are just so busy.

I wonder if the reason he doesn't want to jump up onto the counter has to do with the declawing -- maybe his paws are sensitive, and jumping back down is painful to him.

Mr. Sirius Black is a very handsome fellow, and I'm glad he found his way to you!

What a handsome boy!

I'm so glad you guys found each other, and I'm glad you're keeping the name Mr. Black. I kept trying to think of something but kept coming back to "Mr.Black...it just seems to suit him.

He jumps straight off the counter with no issue, so I'm assuming it doesn't hurt him since he has a TV tray that he could get on to get down(I'm trying to see if I can get him to use that to get on the counter, it gets old picking him up and putting him on the counter in case he wants to eat, he seems to get heavier every time I pick him up.) He just doesn't seem to be getting it yet.

He has a nice case of the 'squirts', most likely because the rescue dewormed him right before sending him home with us(they said they were getting him up to date with his vaccines except for obviously rabies.) Wish they had said they were going to deworm him, I would have told them not to, that I could have the vet do it when I took him in for his rabies(and FeLV vaccine after the FeLV/FIV test because they can't remember if he was tested or not when he came to the rescue:
. Do I need to wait on the shots now? I can't remember, I haven't had a healthy cat in so long that I don't know what to do with a healthy cat that has the squirts, if I need to take him to the vet or just wait(remember he's 12 lbs and around 2 years old so he isn't a little guy.) I started giving him some Forti-Flora I had left over from Attitude so that might help firm him up again.

OK, I haven't slept yet and I need to(while both Sirius and Dexter are asleep), will check in later.

What a smart cat!!
He's the one who has you trained. Why should he jump when his mommy will be the elevator.

Squirts:
maybe the diet change would be having some influence, along with the wormer?
I have one cat that if she gets too much of the dry food I give her as a treat she'll get loose BM's, as long as she's on the canned we have no issues.

Vaccines: hee hee, - well, I doubt you'd want to hear what my input is on the vaccines
Sorry that the Rabies is required, ugh!

Healthy Cat: yep, guess it will be hard to change gears and relax and just enjoy a cat with good health, huh!

Well he needs to use the TV tray if he wants to eat while I'm alseep because I passed out at around 8:30 and didn't wake up until 5 tonight.

He's going to the vet tommorrow he really isn't eating so something isn't right with him at the moment. He is also still having loose stools. He refuses to eat dry food(he took maybe 2 bites of some generic cat chow I keep for the ferals) and will only eat fishy cat food. If it doesn't contain fish or other seafood he won't eat it. Luckily Nuts wasn't UTI prone and liked seafood so I have fishy cat food left over from him. He also refuses to touch any food I add the Forti-Flora to(so did Attitude ironically enough.)

I feel so bad for him, I know he has to feel yucky, hopefully the vet can fix him right up and get him eating again.
