Cat came back, other kitty acting weird

I have two cats, both female. One is a siamese mix, the other a maincoon. My siamese snuck outside the night before and was gone for around 24 hours. We did not realize at first she was gone and it was because of our maincoon, who kept meowing and acting strange that we realized we had not seen the siamese for a while. We searched the house and sure enough, she was gone. We were pretty frantic. (She hides sometimes, so it was not weird that she was not seen for a few hours).

Our maincoon kept pacing by the screen door all evening. We left the sliding door open so that we could hear if she came home. Both cats have never been outdoors, both are 2 years old.

Well the siamese came slinking back around midnight and we let her in and gave her a great big welcome. It's been about 12 hours and the maincoon is acting so strange. She is hissing at the siamese whenever she comes around -- she has tried to attack her several times, growling. These two were as close as sisters.

I am so confused. Why is she doing this, and how do I get her to stop???

Cats rely on smells more than anything and your wayward one smells new, different, threatening.

I would recommend separating them for a few days and then reintroduce them to one another. Here is good article on cat introductions. Using Feliway diffusers is helpful to reduce the anxiety. When you allow them to meet face to face, put a little vanilla extract under the chin and near the base of the tail so they smell like one another.
