Matted Fur Nightmare

To start I am new to this site and I am pretty excited to learn and share so much about cats. I love my cats as though they are my children.

I have a long haired little boy who is about 5 years old. He has always had soft and shiny fur. Over the last month he has started getting matted furballs on his back. I tried brushing them out and he was uncomfortable so I stopped. I try a little every couple days, I don't want him to lose his trust in me, but it only helps a little. I read online that putting oil will help the matted fur to fall out, so I thought I would try it. I tried it on 2 bigger ones and within the first day the balls fell off on their own. He still has quite a bit on him that I need to work out before I give him a bath, but now I am worried about him licking the mineral oil from his fur. Does anyone know if this will hurt him, or affect his eating habits, or make him sick? I used cat cleaning wipes to wipe off most of the oil so I am thinking he is not ingesting that much. Any suggestions, or advice?

Thanks

I'm not sure if the mineral oil is bad for cats or not. I am sure someone will come along with an answer to that.

If you are unable to remove the mats yourself, I suggest taking him to a groomer and have them shaved off.

My cat had some when I got him and I carefully cut them off with scissors but I wouldn't recommend that unless your cat is VERY still and you are sure you won't cut the skin. It was a long and scary process but he cooperated with me.

If the matted parts are really severe and cant be broken down, what I do with my cat is i take out a fine tooth metal comb and comb it at the base of the matt and then I cut the matt. The purpose of this is to prevent the skin from being cut with the scissors xD hope you get what I mean

I have two persians and they can get some bad mats. I brush but they hate to be brushed sometimes I do have to cut a matt. Be very very carefull as kitties have thin skin and the skin pulls up with the matt and you can cut them very easy.. I cut the top of the mat and work my way down very very carefully..
