My 2 month old kitten drinks a lot of water... Whenever i have a cup of water sitting on a table, maggie drinks from it...for minutes at a time. Shes drinks whatever water she can get her paws on. Im not sure if this is a healthy amount...

I'm thinking she just likes water a lot, because in addition Maggie sticks her paw in the water and splashes, and then licks her paw as if to wash herself.

Can someone let me know how much an average 2month old kitten should be drinking?

Thanks!!

Congratulations on your kitten! I'm sure Maggie is a sweetheart! Enjoy these days of kittenhood as time sure does fly when you're having fun. And, trust me, kittenhood can be tons of fun! But, with that fun can come lots of worrying.

It's difficult to know how much is normal for Maggie to drink. And, it's just as difficult to understand just how much water she is taking in. But, at 8 weeks, she should begin to experience going to the vet (if she hasn't already) and being socialized. And, having a working relationship with her vet will be something you can trust and rely on as Maggie grows from a kitten to an adult and beyond.

Since you're concerned, I would recommend bringing her in to the vet for a check up. That way, you can discuss your concerns. Drinking excessively could be a symptom of a larger issue. And, "excessive," is subjective. I don't want to worry you with the what if's. I also don't want to say that her focus on water is just a kitten thing -- just something she loves to play with and drink. So, with all that being said, I think that a vet trip is in order...for more reasons than one.

Good luck to you and Maggie. Please keep us updated on how she's doing. She's sure lucky to have found someone who loves and cares for her as much as you do. And, when you have a chance, I know we'd all love to see pictures of your little sweetheart.

Is Maggie on wet or dry food? If she's on dry, she has to make up for the lack of water in the food, so there may be nothing wrong with her, but I would take her in for a general exam anyways.

If you have her on dry kibble - all the water she can drink won't meet her water needs - according to Dr. Lisa Pierson's website:

http://www.catinfo.org/

Cats Need Plenty of Water With Their Food

The first paragraph on the Feline Urinary Tract Health page is as follows:

If I could have the reader of this webpage take away just one word from this discussion, it would be "water". If your cat is on a properly hydrated diet of 100% canned food - and no dry food - you stand a very good chance of never needing to read this webpage.
...
A cat's normal prey contains approximately 70 - 75 percent water. Dry foods only contain 7-10 percent water whereas canned foods contain approximately 78 percent water. Canned foods therefore more closely approximate the natural diet of the cat and are better suited to meet the catâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s water needs.
I hear the reader saying ".....but my cat drinks a lot of water so he must be getting enough!"
A cat consuming a predominantly dry-food diet does drink more water than a cat consuming a canned food diet, but in the end, when water from all sources is added together (whatâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s in their diet plus what they drink), the cat on dry food consumes approximately half the amount of water compared with a cat eating canned food. This is a crucial point when one considers how common kidney and bladder problems are in the cat.
... Think of canned food as 'hosing out' down your cat's bladder several times each day.
If not - after checking with her doctor and finding everything okay, she may just love water, both to drink and play.
