Collars

Hi! I got a new kitten but shes not used to having a collar. She will be indoor but in case she gets out we want her to have identification. Ive tried everything to get her used to a collar... I put it on and distract her with treats, toys, everything. But somehow she always manages to try and get it off, and then it gets stuck in her mouth. THis ends up turning into a huge thing as she panics and tries to get it out unsuccesfully. Then it takes us about 5 mins to hold her down, get it out and then take it off! It's really scary when this happens... but I dont know what to do! shes very curious about the outdoors and im extreamly worried shell get out! HELP!!

My cats won't keep collars on either and are inside cats. Having them microchipped is a good option. If they do get out by mistake, all your information is in a tiny computer chip in their neck! Here it is only $25 at the humane society.

I put the collar on them and then play with them for alittle while. My guys don't like collars but they keep on certain brand on with out a problem.

Mine are all microchipped as well. No collars for my crew.

After reading this thread and the one in the care & grooming forum I have changed my mind on deciding to put a collar on Zoey. I'm just going to have to live with her being microchipped only.

Strangely otis who hates being touched took to the collar with no problem and doesn't even mind the bell on it(he's so camp)
WZillow on the other hand who is so placid just refused, even from a kitten, maybe some cat's are more sensitive to having things round their necks just like us humans!

I would rather have a collar then a microchip. The whole implanting idea worries me. And around her not many people have it done, I don't know if they even check for it at our spca. Also how long have micro chips been around? I worry about affects that might happen later. Is it good to have a computer chip in you? can it cause cancer or get infected or move to some place it shouldn't be? I would rather just stick to a safe collar.

One of my cats used to go outside. I tried a collar with him, several in fact. Here is the problem: really, the only safe collars for cats are the breakaway kind, as you can see from having yours get stuck in one. Every single time I would let Squirt out with a new collar, he came home later in the same day without it. I just plain gave up. Both of mine are indoors only now, anyway. No collars for me.

I can understand that feeling. However, it's not much different then having a steel or titanium rod in your leg or a metal plate in your skull. In fact it's less invassive since it just goes under the skin. Many heart patients have automatic defribulators and other things that also contain microchips. But it is personal choice and it sounds like you've thought it out quite a bit!

I found a collar at the store yesterday that looks good - the whole collar stretches in addition to having a safety release buckle! Seems like that would be a good choice.

As for the microchips, all of my pets have them - Mr. Underfoot & Sylvestra & Felixia got theirs 8 years ago and have never had any problems. Before going to the expense of getting the pets implanted, though, it's a good idea to call the shelters to see if they do have a scanner & check all incoming animals.

My cat does not like a collar, but he will wear a small harness. I do not leave this on though, just use it when I take him outside on a leash.
