My bengal has a minor heart murmur, I don't know if this is breed specific. Also when I had him vaccinated I had to find a vet that would do a killed vaccine vs live. I really don't have the specifics on what that means, but I was told that a live vaccine could have been harmful to his health because he was a bengal.

Lynx is this one of your breeding Bengals? Is it just a low grade heart murmur? I would think you would not want to Breed him or her if this is breeding stock. JMO

As far as I know ther are not any major health problems in Bengals.

I'm actually not a breeder, I just read the breeder's forum a lot as I plan on starting when I have a house with a yard. (Distant future)
My boy is not breeding stock and was sold as a pet, with a neuter contract that was fulfilled.

Hi,
We have 5 bengals, and never have had health problems, except with Tigger. She has had a few UTI's, but other than that, they are healthy as a horse
They are great animals.

I was doing research via Internet on prevalence of heart murmurs in Bengals after discovering my bengal kitten has a murmur also, and between my research online and talking to the breeders here in HI, apparently it is not uncommon for Bengal kittens to have murmurs. The ultrasound is on Tues to determine the severity of our kitten's heart condition, so wish me luck!

Preliminary results indicate that Rishi could have a pulmonary valve obstruction. Anybody else have experience with this condition in their cat? I work in open heart surgery (on humans) but I don't know what the common treatment is for cats in this situation...do most vets just sit on the problem until symptoms appear? Our vet said she sees it a lot in dogs, but I don't think she has much experience with this in cats...here in HI too, there's not much in the way of advanced vet surgical centers, so we'd probably have to take him to the Mainland if he required surgery, especially since he's so young and kinda small still...hope Rishi's condition is not that bad! (So far he doesn't seem to be exhibiting the typical heart failure/oxygen deprivation symptoms).

Thanks

I check my breeding cats for HCM. It doesn't seem too common but is a concern among Bengal Breeders.

Since the murmur appears to be present since birth, I would definitely attribute it to a congenital condition. I do not yet know the severity of Rishi's problem though...still waiting on those ultrasound results. Sigh...

Sorry to hear there's a problem. I wonder what causes HCM (is that what the problem is with your cat?) Although it does not seem to be too many problems with HCM in bengals many catteries are testing for it now. I am pretty sure they test at UC Davis close to my house so i'll probably have it done as well (Luxor already had it done and he tested negative). The problem with that is it usually dosent show up untill when the cat is older so your breeder probably didn't know it exsited in the cat at all. Also a normal HCM does not mean that it won't show up in the future.

Rishi is not alone in having this problem--one of his brothers from the same litter also has a murmur. The breeder still owns Rishi's brother, and she said that murmurs are common in Bengals and that they usually grow out of the murmur. Hopefully that will be Rishi's case as well, but I'd rather have the ultrasound to be sure. STILL waiting on results!!!

Well hopefully it's nothing. My husband and his daughter have a murmer and the doctors are not concerned about it, so hopefully it will be the same with your kitty. I wish you the best and keep us posted! Hopefully it dosent mean that your cat has HCM!
