problems with spraying

I have two cats, Simon (male) and Riz (female). Simon has been spraying for almost two years now and he has seen a vet. The vet says that he uses "spraying" as a way to get our attention. He is both in/outdoor but he prefers to be outside and he lets us know that he wants out by spraying. He has even begun to spray us. What should I do?

Have you tried the Feliway spray? Also, you must make sure you get whatever it is he has sprayed cleaned up so he can't smell that he has sprayed there before. Make sure you are using something just for cat urine, not something like bleach or any other cleaner. Two years is a long time. What have you tried in the past that has not worked?

I have tried feliway, both the spray and the plug in. Neither have worked. A friend suggested using a mixture of vinegar and water to spray on furniture and walls but its no use. Getting rid of him is not an option, nor is leaving him outside. The only one thing I haven't tried is a kitty whisperer...

I am certainly not a behaviorist but I'm wondering if you made him indoor only the problem would gradually correct itself? I really am not sure if this would help or not. I've had great luck with the Feliway but you've indicated you have had no such luck. I can't help but wonder if the cat does not associate the spraying with letting you know he wants to go out. If you find a solution would you please post it if you have the time?

I am assuming that both Simon and Riz are fixed. I have a friend who let her two cats outside during the day and had problems with her neutered male spraying inside. I suggested she try to bring the outdoors inside for her cats and keep them safely inside. She built vertical spaces for the cats to climb up on, lots of toys, playtime each day with her cats, hid special treats for the cats to hunt out, and grew some kitty grass. The cats adjusted perfectly well and the spraying completely stopped. I believe that these cats are meeting stray cats outside on their home turf. And therefore spray inside because in the cat's mind, they want to keep those strays from trying to come inside of their sanctuary. Just a thought and good luck, I hope you can get a resolution to this long-term behavioral problem. It is a habit now .
