urination on...kitchen counter?

hi, I'm tara (new) & have two cats. Jak (4 this summer) & prittie (10) and they have both living together since 2008, when Prittie moved to PA with my fiancee, from NY. After adapting, they had no issues, other than Jak wanting to play & prittie firming saying "no thanks". They bath each other, occasionally play, etc. They do not want for toys, chasing laser lites, & attention.

Side note: Jak has never been easily stressed out. He loves car rides, very mellow, easy to get along with etc. EVERY time he's been sick, he's let me know it. And these 'illnesses' are the only times he's ever gone outside the box. IF this is stress induced, I have no idea what it would be. Nothing has changed at home, work schedules the same, no new animals, no baby/pregnancy, no new roommate, no feral cats we know of (had one once cuz she tried to befriend us outside while in the hot tub...but not for over 7 months). Nothing has changed with Prittie, We are both loving towards jak, pet, give affection, he purrs, comes over to us for attention, occasionally gets treats from us both, wet food... Jak LOVES the water fountain & drinks a TON daily. He'll site & drink for 20 minutes straight!

Short/condensed version:

October 2009, Jak becomes blocked (urinary) completely. Our vet said he flushed an extremely LARGE amount of sludge & gunk when placing the catheter. He was hospitalized for two days, returned home on meds (for pain) & urinary SO diet. Re-blocked the next day (after being home one nite) & then had the urinary catheter in place two more nites at home. Does ok.

December 12, 2010- UTI (same symptons, urinating outside box, straining, rarely cries) UA positive for UTI. Antibiotics (orbax) & pain/spasm med (torbutrol).

April 29, 2011- Another UTI. Treated on different antibiotics (zeniquin?) & pain med (acepromizine).

June 6, 2011- ANOTHER UTI? started on 3rd type antibiotic (clavamox), with suspision for interstitial cystitis. Next issue, plan on UA, culture & sensitivity & possible bladder biopsy for official cystitis diagnosis.

June 11, 2011- Now crying when urinating outside litter box. Emergency vet visit. Sent out C&S, started on adequan (usually used for arthritic racing horses, for inflammation) injections every 4 days, as well as continue clavamox & acepromazine (pain/sedative). Jak has STILL being peeing outside box, RITE in front of me & fiancee deliberately. Walks rite up beside you & goes. Got home from shopping today, find urine on the kitchen counter. Plain as day. Penned him in litter room, like usual when urinates.

I've read quite a bit on the topic & tried numerous things. I'm praying it's still inflammation from the cystitis (if that is the issue) and it's not becoming behavioral but I'm beginning to worry. I have used feliway when adapting Jak to prittie's arrival, but it didn't help much for him. Also, he doesn't seem to frequent the same places...ranges from cool linoleum kitchen floor, carpeted dining room, carpeted sitting room, carpeted den, carpeted master bedroom and now the counter??? he would've had to jump up about 4 feet, just onto counter, versus on kitchen floor.

I've always used the natures miracle stuff (red bottle) and it seems to work well, but we're diligent about finding it quickly, as he usually lets us know & goes when we're rite there. We've always had three open litter boxes (only 2 cats) varying from fresh step, arm & hammer & feline pine (clumping). There is always two different kinds, as prittie didnt like the feline pine & prefers regular clay litter. We switched for fragrance issue bothering fiancee, not cat issues. The switching of varieties never seemed to correlate with Jak's issues. We clean boxes twice daily, minimum...

Does anybody have experience with:
1) adequan in cats
2)cystitis
3) kitchen counter urination

Thanks so much just for reading!
Tara

Wow. Your post is very detailed. Thanks. Only my guess but I would say that he is still in some kind of distress. As for "where" he goes (like the kitchen counter) I will tell you that my 5 y.o. male cat was going anywhere and everywhere. On the counters, on the floor, in every room of the house. Even on my foot as I sat in the kitchen. So as far as the counter goes, I don't think it makes a difference to Jak. He was there when the need arose.

I'm sorry that I can't give you any real concrete advise, other than to make sure he still doesn't have a health issue. I think sometimes these things start out with a medical issue and turn into something else. For now, put some foil on the counter. That stopped mine from jumping up there.

I'm sure someone with much more knowledge will pipe in here. I'm sorry. I know how this is. I have been dealing with it for months now. It's getting better. I couldn't tell you which of the many, many things I've done is working. I have found though that the Natures Miracle is not the best product out there. I also am diligent. I search twice a day with the flash light. Still, the Natures Miracle just doesn't seem to work as good as some others. Not even when I find and clean it up immediately.

I think another vet visit is in order for you, just to be sure Jak is not in pain.

thanks ligwa!!!

I actually was busy today...I kept him penned up most of the day but just finished setting up some new stuff. Although we did have three itter boxes, I bought a new, larger one. About 2x3 feet. So to that with totally new fresh litter (tidy cat) I added dr. elsey's litter attractant & after jak was drinking from the water fountain, I brought him down & showed him the new box. 5 minutes later, after he left I went in & found pee & poop. He is now back in basement with me (where our 'office/computer/school' area is) and playing with a string beside me at desk (which he hasn't done in quite awhile)...

I also haven't yet heard back about his urine culture. I'm actually gonna be calling tomorrow if I don't hear back by 2PM. Tomorrow I'll be borrowing a blacklite from my brother (he loves those things) to check the house for any spots.

I'm hoping you were rite about him happening to be on the kitchen counter when a twinge of pain or spasm hit & that won't become habit. I think I'm going to pen him up again when I go to work tonite & Scott's sleeping, since he won't be directly supervised. (I work 3rd shift)

I'm just hoping this adequan kicks in soon & takes away the pain because he didn't do anything to deserve it... I'll keep you posted about our progress.

Seti peed on our counter a few times. I tried everything as he had no medical symptoms whatsoever. Sure enough, he forms crystals though he's never had an infection. A few does of Metacam for pain usually stops him from going outside his box. Of course, we switched him to a urinary diet and that has helped some but it hasn't solved everything. We're due to go back to the vet for other ideas but once we got the initial problem solved, he stopped peeing on the counter.

Just got a phone call from vet...

Urine C&S showed positive for bacteria, which will respond to the clavamox. Plan to re-check urine speciman after antibiotics are done. And Jak was out & about in house all nite while I was working & was evidently good. No surprises found yet.

I'm just relieved that there's at least some kind of rationale for the symptoms & peeing outside of box. However he's been on the antibiotics for over two weeks now & I would've hoped the pain/discomfort would have resolved by now so that he isn't feeling enough to go outside box.

Glad you've found some answers. These UTI/crystals can be tricky things to spot, diagnose and treat. Hang in there! I know how frustrating they are!

My chronic cystitis boy used to pee on the kitchen counter when he had flair ups. My counter happens to be made of engineered quartz, so it is very cool to the touch and it feels good to pee on cold surfaces when you are in discomfort. Even if your counter top is not stone, it probably is cooler than other surfaces in your house.

Until you get his chronic condition resolved, and if he continues to pee on the counter, my vet had a great idea: place a couple of ceramic tiles in the bottom of a litter box (sterilite bins are great as they are high sided and cheap), and sprinkle some litter over the top of them. Ceramic tiles are cool which will draw him to the box, and the litter gives him the correct smell for when he pees. You can pick up ceramic tiles pretty cheap in home improvement stores (they often go on sale for under a $1 each).

Whether it be an UTI, cystitis, FIC, or anything in the FLUTD group of disease, cats are uncomfortable when they pee, and will seek out alternatives to a standard litter box (which they relate to their pain). You have to fight the disease, but also think "out of the box" (bad pun here) on how to stop them from peeing on things you don't want them to pee on.

It gets better.
