Litter Box

So I have 3 cats (most of you know this) and they each have their own litter box, HOWEVER Ollie has the biggest and it has an open top concept, well since moving his litter box downstairs with the other litter boxes (his was upstairs until he settled into the house, etc) ALL 3 cats have been using it....it's really not big enough for 3 cats!

So I was thinking since they obviously like a bigger space and an open top would it be possible for me to get a big rubbermaid, probably an under bed storage container or something similar and using it for a litter box for all 3 kitties?

I know people use rubbermaids, but from what I can understand you leave the covers on them and you cut a hole fr them to come and go. I would leave this one completly open...

Do you think this would work?

Ideally, you want to have 1 more litter box than you have cats, so you should have 4 boxes. I'd get 3 more boxes like the one they like and put those where their other boxes are. In our house, I have 2 cats & 3 boxes. There are days when only 2 of them are used, some days only 1 is used, and they rotate which box they like to use. Go figure! LOL

We use large storage boxes with approximately 4" high sides. No covers, of course. They are Steriilte boxes as they are much cheaper than Rubbermaid. I have 3 of them in the basement that 4 of my cats use. They are all together, but it works fine. They are very cooperative about it.

My Tonya, who lives upstairs in 3 rooms of the house, has her own Sterilite box with sides about 10" tall. She is messy, and because the litter box is upstairs in a room with a rug, the high sides help. No cover is used. Lily sometimes uses this box, too.

So, I have 5 cats with 4 litter boxes or pans. It works fine for us. But, I do think 1 pan for 3 cats isn't enough. I'd go with 3, even if you put them together in the same place.

Well I would leave all their regular litter boxes still out.

But the litter box I bought Oliver is $50.00, I would rather not have to spend $150.00 on litter boxes....

I'm going to go to town tonight and check to see what is all out there....I'm actually excited, LOL

That's as much as a "people toilet". For that much money it should flush.

There are Sterilite bins of all sizes and shapes. . .and they're much cheaper than store-bought litterboxes. You don't need to cut a hole, and I never leave the top on (even on the boxes with holes). Just pick a box that's about the same size as his litterbox (since you know they like that one. But of course I'm sure bigger wouldn't be a bad thing!) and buy a few.

While having a really big box can serve to replace a few smaller boxes, I wouldn't try to have fewer than 2 litterboxes in a multi-cat home, no matter how big.

These are what my 3 cats use, and they have 3

I have the Rubbermaid and Cincy uses it. The Litter Spinner is what the other 2 use and i actually hope Cincy will too. I save on time and on litter costs becasue it is always clean and I use less

Costco.com has the best price

I just bought a rubbermaid bin and replaced the current litter box. The bin is bigger (hopefully I won't find crusties stuck on the sides as much).

We'll see if my cat takes to it today, lol. I set it up during lunch.

We use the sterlite containers too. I have 3 of them that come up about 4 inches. I like them so much better than regular litter boxes. My inside boy is very long and he always had a hard time fitting. The sterlite boxes give plenty of room to move around. I do have one regular litter box, so I have 4 boxes for 2 cats.

I have rubbermaid containers - no tops either... mine are with Microban, which is great as it doesn't stink AT ALL
Microban is a special treatment on the plastic that makes it bacteria free - they have all types of stuff with it now... I never seen sterilyte containers with it, but all my boxes have it.
Petmate has an amazing box with it as well - I have one of them: Petmate Giant Litter Pan

The only reason why I got the petmate Giant litter pan is because after I had a microban treated litterbox, I will never, EVER want one without it - it makes a HUGE difference in odor control... At the time I was looking for another storage container, it was hard to find treated ones.... Now I can find them at Target.
