Foster baby, Twig.

We have no idea what happened as he seemed fine this morning and all was going so well with them. They were 5 weeks yesterday. We got home from work and I heard a terrible kitten meow, went upstairs to find him cold on the floor, screaming and gasping. We ran with him out the door to the vet which is literally across the street from us where they tried to warm him up with hot water bottles. His temp was so low it wouldn't register. They gave him oxygen an epi shot and steroids, and although he seemed to perk up a bit for the first little while, his heart rate slowed down so much they could barely find it, and he was really gasping and struggling. We made the decision at that point to end his suffering, and I stayed with him as he passed. It's been a terrible night and I am so upset... I just was not expecting this at all and will now be keeping a much closer eye on the remaining 3 babies... Portia is such a great Mom and these kittens were showing no obvious signs of illness. The vet said it could have been a number of things... Rest in peace precious baby Twig... You were loved.

Oh, how painful for you! I'm so sorry. You do all you can. You do all anyone could. But still these things happen. It takes a big, big heart to do what you do - a heart that takes a lot of bruising.

RIP little Twig.

Thank you all so much. I hope you all know know how much you mean to me.

I was blown away by the support of the shelter staff, especially Kari, the executive director of the shelter. A few years back when I started fostering, there was a WHOLE LOT of red tape in order to get a cat/kitten into a vet unless we were willing to pay for it ourselves. It had to be only one vet who they dealt with, under $50 (what vet procedure is under $50?!?), preapproved, etc. When we brought Twig to the vet, I told them to do whatever they needed to do to help him, and whatever the shelter wouldn't cover, WE would!

I contacted Kari that night when we got home, so upset, and explained everything that happened. She sent back the SWEETEST message, and even gave me her home phone number in case I needed to talk! She said they would take care of everything, and she was so glad that I rushed him to the vet and was there with him when he passed. It is SO NICE to have someone in charge of the shelter who actually care more about the animals than anything else!

The shelter is preparing a new location to move to, and a part of it is a new pet cemetery. Kari said they will bury Twig's ashes there, and that I will be able to go visit with him any time.
