I dont think our cat's mother taught her soft claws...

We found our cat alone in a warehouse as an extremely timid 4-ish month old feral. Over the past year and a half, she has made leaps and bounds and is a total cuddle bunny. But, I'm feeding a neighbor's cat this week, and realized that all of the other cats we know are less claw-y. Our little beast seems to get hers snared on things, including our skin. Could it be possible that she doesn't know how to retract her claws as well as these other cats? And how can we teach her not to use her claws? She uses a nice piece of cheap modular ikea furniture as her scratching post. Advice on training her would be much appreciated!

It isn't so much a matter of training her as it is that she needs her claws clipped. Bijou's claws get caught in fabric if I don't keep them trimmed.

My neighbour recently asked me to clip his kitty's paws and was surprised at how easily and quickly it is done.

If you aren't into clipping, you can get caps for kitty's claws which glue on. I personally prefer clipping.
