Has anyone every used LegalZoom? Is making a will that way legal and binding? Or just one of the free will forms you can find on the internet would be even better.

My father (80 y/o) wants to make a will but he has no money to pay a lawyer. We called Legal Aid, and the only way they do wills is if a person is terminal. He doesn't have a complicated estate, he rents and owns very little, so would a do it yourself will work?

I believe that you can make a will yourself, without an attorney, and it will be binding, if witnessed and signed properly, etc. However, I really think you'd be better off paying an attorney. Wills can lead to a BIG headache, if not done properly. You don't want that headache after losing a loved one.

Hmmm, interesting website - sure would fill the need for many!

http://www.legalzoom.com/

I bet there are a lot of legal issues depending on the State in which you live.

I thought about using my laptop built-in camera and video recording my Will - wonder if that would work. I'm just trying to figure out how to make sure all our cats are taken care of should we pass before them.

I'd be interested in reading those that have experienced this Product.

He can't afford an attorney. He only gets about $850 a month SS and has to pay rent, utilities, groceries, etc. out of that. He doesn't own much of anything, just the furnishings - no house, no car, very little money in the bank, etc. He just wants a simple will to make it less complicated for us down the road. And by simple I mean all of my worldly possessions go to xxx.

I did call the Legal Aid where he lives, and they will only do one pro bono if a person is terminal.

So, I think I'm going to buy a copy of that WillMaker software, fill one out, get it witnessed and notarized, and hopefully that will be good enough. At least it will make him feel better

We tried something similar to that and the Notary wouldn't notarize unless it was from an attorney - something maybe only in California?

But, it is sure worth a try - maybe call a Notary and ask if this sort of thing is possible. ?

Interesting. I guess I better call a Notary before I buy the software. Sounds like a scam to get more money for the lawyers.
