So far Weiner has maintained that he will stay in office, and there is little the Democratic heirarchy can do to force him out, other than strip him of his spot of the House's powerful energy and commerce committee.

Republicans in Congress have been pressing the Democratic leadership to expel Weiner, but Pelosi said in a statement: "None of us, not anybody here, has the power to force somebody out of office. That person has to decide himself as to whether he will stay or he will go."

Weiner has said that he would not resign without talking to his wife
So that means once in office, a congressman can do whatever the heck he/she wants and no one in the government has the power to remove that person from office, except for the person him/her self?

How stupid is that!!! Even the President can be impeached!

I think Weiner should resign right after every other politician that has been involved in a sex scandal resigns. We'd have a huge turnover of politicians!!

I'm not just referring to Weiner.

The article states:

Quote:
"None of us, not anybody here, has the power to force somebody out of office. That person has to decide himself as to whether he will stay or he will go.

That to me means that no one can remove a person from office regardless of what they do. So that means that the person can do anything he/she wants, regardless of the activity involved, and still be able to keep their government seat! That is seriously wrong!

They can be removed if they are convicted of a serious crime. Weiner hasn't actually done anything illegal. The police looked into it, and found that no crime was committed. Those calling for his resignation are doing so on moral grounds. But morals are a matter of opinion.

Personally, I think he has shown himself to be stupid, in some ways, and lacking good judgement. But this is hardly unusual. I wouldn't vote for him, if I lived in his district. But what the voters will do, should he run again, is anybody's guess. These things seem to die down in controversy over time.

The people who voted him in can have a recall election and remove him. While it seems to be a detriment here, it is also a safeguard. It would be dangerous in a representative government if one faction could remove someone else. A morals charge would be a great way to get rid of your opponent who also happened to disagree with your ideology or was blocking your desire to pass some legislation.

Personally I think people are way overreacting to this whole situation with Wiener. He did something stupid and then did something MORE stupid in an attempt to cover it up, but... he didn't commit a crime. He's just, you know, dumb.
