Maine Koon Attacks!

We have a female cat that is part Maine Koon. Around the house when no one but me and my wife are around shes fine enter a stranger. If some one comes in the house she does not know she will lay out of the way somewhere until they approach her then the teeth showing and hissing starts. My question is, is this typical for a Maine Koon? I realize she is only part Maine Koon but I think that part of her comes out quite a bit. From what I know of them they are extremely tempermental cats does anyone here own one and what as your experience been with yours around strangers?

Sorry this thread may seem silly but you don't know until you ask.

I don't think that's typical of Maine Coons. I've known many in my years as a pet sitter and find most to be friendly and intelligent. I have a part Maine Coon (my husband calls him a Georgia Coon since we live in Georgia) and he's one of the friendliest cats I know.

Was not sure. Thanks. I figured it just maybe typical of her since we do not get a lot of people coming to the house all the time. I do know the vet hates to see her coming!

My cat is part Maine Coon as well. He is SUPER friendly...even with total strangers. In fact, when he lived at my parents, he used to sit on the ledge at the top of the stairs and wait for kisses, lol. Maine Coons are well known for their friendliness and calm demeanor.

There must be reason for her fear of strangers. Perhaps someone else here will be able to help you figure out the reason. Good luck!

Poor cat. She's scared. I have a cat that will hide for hours when someone comes over. I almost feel guilty having guest. My suggestion to you is to put your kitty in a room all by herself when someone comes to your house. She will feel safe and your guest won't get hurt.

I have a cat that only gave one vet a problem. He always behaves just fine with any other vet. Perhaps there is a personality conflict?

That is not your cat attacking, it is your cat saying she is in a lot of fear....
Please take her to a safe place before visits come, or provide her with her shelves or cat furniture so she can watch the humans interactions from a safe, high place...
