Anybody here a DVM or CVA?

I've decided to go into veterinary medicine, and I was wondering if anybody here had any tips or info I should know about or anything else useful.

I'm going to be applying at Texas A&M for Spring semester and focusing on Nutrition.

The only tip I can give is to think hard about why you want to be a vet, and be sure you have some practical experience before you apply. Do you already work with/own animals? Can you do some work experience at a local vet or animal shelter, farmer or riding stable? First I think it is essential for you to see all sides to working with animals, and second, vet schools, like all colleges, like to see that you have gone that extra bit to learn about your chosen career and are not just being sentimental about it. Good luck.

I have grown up with animals all my life and taken care of many personally. I have rescued two cats, one emaciated, the other FIV+. I haven't worked for a vet's office or shelter, but I have worked for a pet 'spa and resort.'

I'm not sure how Texas A&M decides on who is accepted, but I know that Purdue's vet school is really difficult to get into. My sister in law just graduated as a DVM.

She majored in animal medicine as her undergrad and was put on the waiting list her first year applying. After speaking with an adviser, she was told to get practical experience working for a veterinarian and apply again the next year. She was on the waiting list again, but close enough to the top she got in.

I'm not saying you won't get in if you don't do this, but you increase your chances if you do. And if it's something you have a passion for, don't give up if you're not accepted the first time around. Just learn what you can do to make your application stand out and reapply the next year.

Good luck!!!

One of our members at TCS recently graduated from vet school. I'm sorry, but I don't remember his name and I've tried searching, but can't seem to find the thread he started announcing his graduation.

I agree about being patient and persistent - and speaking with counselors about how to best strengthen your application. As I understand it, getting into vet school is tougher than getting into med school, so don't be disappointed if you don't get in at first - but find out what you can do to help your application credentials. Good luck!
