Trying out a new litter

I accidentally picked up scented clumping litter when I went new-kitten shopping back in April. They haven't seemed to mind it but I can't stand the smell, so I decided to try a new litter.

I got Dr. Elsey's Precious cat litter. I got the multi-cat formula though I didn't see much difference between it and the "Ultra" and it was a more convenient bag shape for hoisting up my stairs as well (lol!).

I got another pan for them as they've gotten much bigger since I got them at 6 weeks old and they seem to enjoy going to the bathroom at the same time This should make it much easier to keep the boxes clean as well since there will be fewer items per box. I know the "number of cats + 1" rule but I just don't have room for 3 litter boxes in my tiny apartment I'll have to take up my bath mat with the 2nd box as it is.

One box will still be the Scoop Away so that we don't have any box avoidance issues and the new box will be exclusively Dr. Elsey's until it's time to change the litter in the old box.

I first heard about Dr. Elsey's in this article from CatInfo.org - The Litterbox From Your Cat's Point of View. While I think some of Dr. Lisa's suggestions are a bit extreme, it does have some good info. (She suggests never leaving more than 2 or 3 "items" in the box - with two cats and working all day I think that would be impossible. Plus Garfunkel has to mark the box as soon as I scoop it so if I followed that advice, I'd be in a never-ending loop of litter scooping!)

Anyway, about to put the new box out so I'll let you know how they take to it!

Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Litter is the best thing ever! Well, ok, not the best thing ever, but in terms of clay cat litter it is! I tried it after reading some talk about it on here, and got my free bag rebate too, and it's all I use now. It's SO MUCH LESS DUSTY than any other clay or corn clumping litter I've tried. When we first adopted Dorothy, she came with giardia, so I bought Arm & Hammer and Tidy Cats cat litter (they were on sale at the time) because I was scooping and changing the whole box a lot while getting rid of the giardia, and I didn't want to waste the Dr. Elsey's litter because it's more expensive. I forgot how dusty and horrible that stuff was! I was happy to switch back to the 'good' stuff. I hope your kitties are cool with it, and i'm sure you will be too.

I'm so glad you like it!

It has officially been used by the buss-heads. Phew! When I put the box down Garfunkel immediately thought it was a new toy even though, ya know, it's exactly identical to the box adjacent to it, full of a bunch of similarly-textured clay litter... he got in the box - okay, good - but then moved his paw and some litter moved with it so he started going crazy attacking it.

I tried putting him in the old box, then the new box, then the old box, then the new box so he'd maybe get the picture? Nope. Then I sprinkled some Scoop Away on top so it would have the "right" scent, then mimed like I was scooping it. That seemed to work better but he still freaked whenever the litter moved.

Eventually I was just like "whatever" and walked away, fearful he'd kick out the contents in their entirety, but they ended up following me. A little later I heard digging in the litter so went into the bathroom, and there was Garfunkel, pooping in the new box! CATS!

I use the Multi Cat Precious litter too. My kitties love it. It does such a great job with odor control. I only wish my little Jake wouldn't pee on the sides. It makes it so difficult to clean no matter what litter I try.

I had used Feline Pine Scoopable for almost 2 years. I really liked it since it was flushable and the litter box was in the bathroom. Yet, as time went by, each box seemed different. Sometimes it would clump well and other times, the clumps would all break up. When my feral, Shadow began coming in the house, I switched to Dr. Elsey's Litter Attract. Jake loved it. I then moved right to the multi cat formula. Both cats liked it and I liked the odor control. I did miss the flushable litter! So I tried World's Best. It truly was the World's best, but both cats hated it. I loved it since Jake couldn't pee on the sides since it was made with corn and was so light and almost fluffy! It cleaned like a dream and was flushable too. Shadow only used it once and would go running to the door to go outside instead of using the box and Jake didn't go for 2 days!!! So World's Best didn't work for them.

I do like Dr. Elsey's and it is cheaper than World's Best!

Yeah, I read in the reviews that a lot of cats don't like the corn smell I'm sorry it didn't work for you!

I also love this litter. I've tried others out but I always come back to the Precious Cat Ultra as nothing else seems to work as well. I'm glad your kitties are using it

Just scooped for the first time since putting the box down - was running late this morning and didn't have time.

Firstly, I LOVE having two boxes. it makes me want to find a place to squeeze in a third - and when I move in January to a bigger place, I'm definitely getting a third.

Secondly, there was a huge difference in the Dr. Elsey's box and the Scoop Away box. The clumps in the new box did not break off little chunks when I shook the scooper to get the extra litter off, and it was so much easier just to move the scooper through the litter. The Scoop Away felt heavy and dragged on the scooper - and again, those clumps which make me feel like the litter is so nasty.

Looks like Dr. Elsey's is a hit! Thanks for your responses - good to know others have had success with this as well!
