I am so sorry this has happened especially to your little girl. It's hard enough with an elderly cat or a cat that is ill I can't imagine what this would be like. It could be any number of things. The thing that came to my mind first is throwing a blood clot. It could also have been some type of poisoning. Unfortunately this happens even with a cherished well cared for pet.

Oh, I'm so sorry - you all must be devastated. I'm not sure even a necropsy would show the answer, and it may be too late to request one from your vet. I was thinking the same thing - either a clot, or an previously unknown heart condition. Your family will be in my thoughts.

My heart goes out to you and your little girl. I think this is the most painful way one can lose a beloved cat. We've lost one of ours the same way. Seemingly in perfect health, no sign of anything wrong.......Then we got up one morning and found him in one of his favorite sleeping places..... We had a necropsy done and learned that the cause of death was cardiomyopathy.......

I can offer you this piece of information for quick reading right now.
http://www.vetinfo.com/csuddeath.html

If you go to Google you'll find you can read for weeks and weeks about cardiomyiopathy and sudden death. A tremendous amount of information is available. (To me all that reading was comforting, it helped me deal with the pain and sadness that would never go away, never stop hurting.)

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

(((Hugs)))

My first thought was a blood clot indicating some kind of heart disease. I had the exact same thing happen to me. My cat had just turned 2 too, and about a month later he just collapsed and died. He had been to the vet for regular checkups and some random problems (conjunctivitis for one thing) and the vet never once found anything wrong with him relating to his heart. Apparently, its something that goes undiagnosed fairly often. We opted to not to the necropsy because the vet said even that might not tell us exactly what happened, but my vet has been practicing for over 30 years, and he said that sudden death is almost always caused by a heart problem, and often an undiagnosed heart problem.

I am so sorry that you lost your cat though. I was in complete shock when it happened to me. Its just over a year later and I still cry every time I think about him. Your cat is probably playing with my Meepers at the Rainbow Bridge now - happy and healthy and whole again
. Again, I am so sorry.

ETA: I read about HCM for days and days after my Meepers died, and one thing that I read was the average age of a cat with undiagnosed, and therefore untreated, HCM. I can't find that page again for some reason, so I don't remember the exact amount of days it said. But whatever the number was, my Meepers was just about 2 weeks shy of that average age to die at. So it does seem like right at or after 2 years old is pretty common
. Definitely read up on it though. The reading made me feel better, and less guilty. I was a wreck because I was upset that I didn't do anything to help him. But with absolutely no symptoms there was absolutely nothing that I could have done, and it did make me feel better to realize that.

So very, very sad. I'm so sorry.

I've known two cats that have died like that (and I've known an awful lot of cats). One was a MALE calico. He lasted for about a year, then died suddenly.

The other one recently died. She was an especially unusual cat with a mostly white coat, with black marbling. She was extremely shy and retiring. She lived at the shelter where I volunteer. I was thrilled that she got adopted, because I had little hope. She was very beautiful, but so reserved. Three days in her new home, a quiet home with no other pets, she had a heart arrack and died. She was happily playing when it happened. Her new owner was distraught. The shelter vet did a necropsy and found a major heart defect. She was about two years old. (RIP my dear little Valentina).

These things are rare, but so upsetting.

Your poor little girl! I'm so sorry. RIP your dear cat, too.

Oh Basil my deepest condolences to you and your little girl.  How hard this must be.  I think, like the other posters, it must have been heart/circulatory related or poisoning.  I would think if it was poisoning the kitty would have been in a different position or perhaps rigid.  I am so very sorry for your loss.
