Any insight into what startles them?

A list of things that DO NOT startle my kittens:

-A gushing bathtub faucet
-Toilet flushing
-Loud-as-heck, terrifying dryer buzzer that sends my heart racing
-Me stomping ominously to wherever they are currently causing mischief
-Dropping three plates and about 20 steel knives/forks into the sink with a very loud CLANG
-Putting down the cover to the toilet seat ("putting" it down - aka dropping it)
-Anything on the TV no matter how unexpected

A list of things that DO startle my kittens:

-Raising the blinds (the "shhhhhhhck" sound)
-Me sneezing - and NO, it's not THAT loud!
-Moving my arm 1 inch while they lounge 2-3 feet away
-Closing my laptop (quiet click)
-Basically anything I think is unobtrusive or non-threatening

Do I have a coupla weirdos, or does this sound familiar to any of you?

As I've mentioned before, the disciplinary loud clapping and firm "NO!" does not even make these babies blink, much less stop what they're doing. I wonder if I could train myself to sneeze whenever they're doing something bad?

Is there something about those latter actions that I'm missing in terms of why my kittens think they're scary?

Sami is too old to care about any loud/sudden noises...

Parker and Buddy are not startled by:
-Toilet
-Dropping dishes
-Fireworks
-Thunderstorms
-Sudden loud music/tv (accidently sitting on the remote )
-Yelling

Things that scare the crap out of them:
-Moving my feet on the carpet. (They get MAD air from that hahaha)
-Shaking anything that las liquid in it
-Plastic bags (touch one when they are sniffing it and they fly)
-Last night I scared Buddy with a piece of bread...

To be fair, ALL cats are weird in one way or anything. They do the most random, unexplainable things, get scared by nothing and so on. Strange creatures they are.

I had a real laugh when I read this, very funny topic. I have two cats myself, and Pandora is cool as a cumber - rarely startled by anything (a loud BANG may elicit her to lift her head up in lazily inquiry, but thats it!). But her sister, woo boy.

Zena is also terrified of sneezing, or at least is VERY concerned about my health when I do sneeze. She races away, and then bolts right back up to me and does a little mew-chatter every single time. The running gag around here is that is her way of saying 'bless you'. You know whats funny, though? Fake sneezes get no response.

She will run in blind fear of: the vacuum (but not the hairdryer), the toaster, the kitchen timer's monstrous CLICK, and toilet flushing.

I have no insight to offer you, but what a funny post / topic.

Cats aren't called inscrutable and mysterious for no reason, eh?
