Feline Leukemia Test & Shot

My kitten is 12 weeks old & when I took him to the clinic today (2nd visit), the vet gave him a Feline Leukemia Vaccine (1st one). I thought the kitten had to be tested for Feline Leukemia before getting the shot. Then they told me to come back in 2 weeks so he can get his 2nd Feline Leukemia shot. Should my kitten of been test first?

Also, he got his 4-in-one shot his last visit (FVRCP), what shots does that include?

Feline luekemia should always be tested for before any vaccine is given.

The vax is not really needed as a core vax if the cat is low risk (indoors only).

Feline leukemia facts

FVRCP facts
FCRCP is a core vaccine reccomended for all cats

I would never, ever give that shot for an inside cat. None of my vets do either... It is a vaccine that can have harsh side effects. Some have lost cats to it, including a member here at the forum.
If your cat is going to stay inside, I would not give the follow up one - for this or FIV.

That is so scary, you'd think a vet knows what they're doing!! So you saying, he shouldn't of received this vaccine without being tested first??!!

What are the side effects of it?

I lost my first - and very much loved - cat to FELV.

Yes, your cat should be tested first before giving the shot but mine was not. I didn't know any better either.

If your cat goes outside AT ALL you should make sure they get all necessary FELV shots. I'm not a big fan of vaccines at all but losing a young kitty to FELV is a horrible experience. I don't know about the side effects of the shot but I know there are some.

Good luck!
