Last June, my husband fell in love with and adopted a "black smoke" kitty from the BC SPCA. He was estimated to be 6 years old at the time and my husband renamed him Mephistopheles, Tophel for short (rhymes with waffle).

Tophel was the neediest kitty I have ever seen. He was literally starved for love and would instantly purr and react the second you touched him. I've gathered together some pics, beginning with when we first adopted him.

At first, it was very difficult to get a picture of Tophel, he was so needy we had to hold him because kept coming towards the camera for some lovin'!

temporarily sequestered in one room

After two months, he's in the rest of the house (it looks like he's holding Lily in his paws, lol).

relaxing... seems he likes it here

Comfy on Christmas pillows - check out the mane he grew!

Took these two yesterday; he's part of our family for a year now.

He's not anywhere as needy as he used to be, but he's still a love-bug!

Tophel is a very lovely boy
and seems to have settled very nicely in his new family.

Awww. Pretty kitty.

I had a Mistoflees too. Is he named after the cat from "Cats"?
And yes- he was black from his ears to the tip of his tail.

His nickname though was ""stoffees"

He died of kidney failure at the ripe old age of 17 almost 2 years ago.

Then we got another black cat and I refused to name her Mistoflees the second. So we settled on HollyHeart.

What a handsome boy! I can see why your husband fell in love with him, and he has only gotten more sophisticated and handsome with time!

Aw! I asked my husband your question, and since neither of us have seen Cats (maybe I shouldn't admit that here), he said it's not that and not from Faust, either, it predates those. In Greek, the name means "not a lover of light" and it evolved to mean the devil during the Renaissance. My husband said when he saw Tophel, whose fur was pretty dark then, he thought, "What a handsome devil."

More pics...

In the beginning, we had to hold Tophel down to take pictures. You can see one of his paws splayed out in the process of kneading. When we'd pick him up and hold him, he'd knead in the air and it looked like he was air-swimming, very cute.

Peeking around the corner in the house.

He's a really sweet teddy bear.

another latest photo, you can see the hair between his toes

Thank you for all the kind comments! With 2 female humans and 2 female felines my husband is happy to have another male around the house.

I'll bet he is happy to have some male companionship, and what a handsome companion! The Teddy Bear shot is so sweet.
