Maybe this should be in the Raw forum, but since it felt like 'regular' food, and I wanted more people to see it, I'm putting it here... Of course, move it if you see fit.

I was cat food shopping at the SPCA Marketplace yesterday, and they had free samples of this Stella & Chewy's "Natural, Raw Freeze Dried Dinners for Cats" in Yummy Lickin Salmon & Chicken flavor. I took one, and broke up a nugget in a dish, and Genever scarfed it! She doesn't usually scarf anything!

Here's the company website http://www.stellaandchewys.com/index.php

It looks to be good, but also maybe pricey, according to a quick google shopping web search. However, I can't find anywhere where it says HOW MUCH to feed!? Meaning, I don't really know if it is expensive or not, because I don't know how far a package goes.

Anyway, does anyone have experience with this food? For now, anyway, I'll just use upthe few nuggets I have left as a kind of snack, and maybe keep my eye out for it in the future to get as a treat or to mix in with the regular foods..

In the patties? I know several who use these for ferrets and they go through about 1 a day per ferret, so I would guess 1-2 per day for a cat. I've never used freeze dried because it is so much pricier than raw but thought about it for lamb and duck which are too expensive for me to buy at the store. Although if you just use as a treat than it would go quite a ways and be a good healthy one.

Most of the people I know that feed it to their ferrets also use other forms of Raw or kibble, so the 1 patty a day is in addition to other foods...

Thanks for the replies.

Well the sample I got was freeze dried nuggets. http://www.stellaandchewys.com/cat-driedsalmon.php

I probably will just use up this little bag and maybe if I happen to see it somewhere on sale pick up some to mix with the other food.. but I was just wondering if anyone else fed this and how much they fed.

Ok, couldn't get this site to load earlier but caseyshiddenpantry sells it and for the nuggets says " On average, for each 6 pounds of weight feed 1.5oz per day." They also sell the ASF freeze dried which seems to be a better deal but not sure if the quality is equal or not.

I also got some samples from my natural pet food store where I get all of my dog/cat food. there was a representative from Stella/Chewys there last weekend. I tried the Freeze-dried patties for my older JRT dog, Wilbur, because he is going off his food. He LOVES them. If I were to switch him over totally, he would get four patties a day and he weighs eighteen pounds. BUT, this would cost me about thirty dollars every nine days. So I am going to give him one patty a.m. and p.m. mixed with his canned food. He is happily eating again. I am thinking of looking into this for my cat Pipsqueak, who has come down with FIC, feline idiopathic cystitis. Apparently, going raw is the best for this. I am looking into this and not going that route yet.

Does anyone know how long a bag of their freeze dried food lasts a 14 lb cat and a 3 lb kitten if this is fed as their only diet?

It's really hard to say. It depends on how much they eat. S&C says on their .8oz single serving packet that it is the equivalent of 3oz rehydrated.

And I'm guessing your kitten eats as much as your 14 lb cat, am I right?  Stella and Chewys is expensive if it's your only source of food.  I would say VERY expensive.  I use it as snacks, but not meals.  Mine don't like it rehydrated anyway,  But they love (most of the flavors) dry.

Let's see, just pulled a package out of the cupboard.  this one says for a 14 lb cat to feed 1 7/8 cup per day!  And I would say there are probably only about 8 cups in the bag.  (just eyeballing it)

Now, for the kittens, this is what it says "% of expected adult weight   Multiple of Adult REquirement"

                                                                          10%                                       2.2

                                                                          25%                                       2

                                                                          50%                                       1.7

                                                                          75%                                       1.4

I have absolutely NO IDEA what that means
