These were in Massachusetts. Mother Nature has been really cruel this year. That first one of the water being sucked up into the tornado is just freaky!
I would having been peeing in my pants if I would have been stuck in one of those cars that was on the bridge!

God bless all those people who have had to go thru all these horrible tornadoes this year.

The tornadoes this year have been crazy. I don't know how people handle living in Tornado Alley, where you know you'll get tornadoes every year. Those Mass. ones were freaky. Personally, I would've been scrambling for the basement instead of taking video!

It was a F1 so major. We had a Tornado warning here in Maine the same time. I don't ever recall a warning before. Hurricane yes often but tornados no..

Springfield Massachusetts wasn't the only place in Massachusetts to get a tornado last night. The towns surrounding my town had 1 touch down. It didn't go through my town, but we got the wind, hail, lightning. The lightning never stopped. It was mostly chain. It was so bright it lit up the whole house. Also looking at it, when it stopped flashing made you blind for a few seconds. The sky went from dark grey, to dark purple, to pitch black, like night. It was really scary.

County sheriff's department called with a recorded message saying what to do. The emergency broadcast system broke into all the channels telling what to do. They all said to get to your cellars. Lot of good that does, the houses here don't have cellars! None of them said how to protect your pets.

What's up with the weather? Massachusetts doesn't get tornadoes. 1 back in the 1950's and 1 back in the 1970's.

Luna was scared to death. Midnight wasn't afraid at all. He was more curious than anything.

We didn't lose electricity, the lights blinked a few times but that was it. There are some branches down here, but nothing serious.

EF1 isn't that strong, although any tornado can cause major damage. It's when you get the EF3 and higher that really get bad and deadly. Take for instance Joplin MO. I am guessing that was an EF4 or EF5.

So scary! I grew up in CT and most of my family still lives up that way. My dad is a truck driver and drove through Springfield about 15 minutes after the tornadoes touched down. I am so sorry for the people that are living with the aftermath of these storms!

From the local news:
NWS confirms MINIMUM EF3 damage with Springfield to Monson/beyond tornado. Statement "Springfield to Monson and beyond" important, as it implies my idea of potential record Massachusetts tornado path length still viable.

I heard that too, but seeing how severe the damage was, I was thinking an EF5. I heard 198 mph winds, so that is just under an EF5, which start at 200 mph winds.

Thanks for posting those links, wow really terrifying! I'm kind of glad I didn't know Massachusetts had tornadoes when we were living in Cambridge.

I grew up in Texas right where "Tornado Alley" begins. When I was little I was scared about a tornado coming at night without warning, but during the day, there are usually one or more signs to alert you that a tornado is close by:

1. daylight turns to a greenish or yellowish color
2. sky darkens significantly
3. hail
4. your ears tell you that the air pressure dropping
5. thunderheads and/or wall clouds
6. loud noise and 2x4's are flying through the air <-kinda obvious

We didn't have basements where I grew up so we would take cover in the bathtub. I sure wish there were some warning signs before earthquakes!
