I thought maybe someone here could offer some insight on this. This was found in the attic of a lady I work with. We know that it is a wrought iron baby bassinet. What we don't know anything about is the type of material that was used for the part that the baby would actually lie in. There are lots of small holes around the rim, so we know it attached there. We just don't know if it was simply some type of cloth, or canvas, or wicker, etc. Any one have any ideas or seen one like it?

I would guess some kind of basket, but I guess you could build a "purse" of fabric and attach it to the sides. Don't think it would be very comfortable.

Looks like it might have been some type of large wicker basket.

IMHO it doesn't look too sturdy or safe for an infant. I doubt it would pass a safety inspection for child safety.

It looks like it would look nice in a garden setting with some kind of planter and some pretty flowers.

Here are some links to similar items. You could probably work out what type of pillowing is used from the pictures:

Working at Toys R Us/Babies R Us, I have seen truckloads of beautiful cribs, etc., coming back during the many recent recalls.

I think a lot of it is overkill, but I don't have a baby, either.

I'm guessing a wicker basket, too.

Off topic, but is that a Hindu rope plant in the background? It's very pretty.

Either wicker or a fabric basket.

I wouldn't use it for a real baby but a doll collector who likes DIY projects might love it.

I second that! Something that would send trailing vines down over the sides would be beautiful!

I swear these companies issue recalls simply to get things off of the market and prevent people from passing items down or reselling them. Forces people to buy new items for each kid. Keeps profits up. I noticed that a lot of my baby equipment items were recalled right about the time the original kid would outgrow them. My stroller was recalled after 2 years, the baby wipe warmer after about 2 years, the crib was recalled after 2-3 years, the swing after a year, the carrier car seat system after a year. Makes you wonder.

Very pretty piece. I could see putting a doll or something in it (I have 4 AG dolls LOL).

And I hear you about the recalls on infant furniture. The crib my kids had as a baby is one of those (GASP!) drop-side cribs. And we paid a LOT of money for it at the time (like $300 for it!)

And now we can't hand it down or sell it to anyone b/c it's a drop-side crib. Sigh. So it sits in DD's closet- taking up space. I honestly don't want to trash a $300 piece of furniture either.

I have a bassinette too- my mom paid well over $100 for it. That's probably "unsafe" as well- even though it has sat under the bed for years.

Over the river and through the woods...
Yeah, it's amazing we all survived childhood and lived to the ripe old age we are.
Next they'll have people raising their kids in a padded cell. Hey, now there's an idea!

As for the bassinette, it looks very similar to one on display in our local museum, and that one does have a basket inside. That one, I think, is from the late 19th century but they probably made them long after that. Your friend may want to get a collector to take a look at it (if she doesn't want it). She may be able to get something out of it.

It actually is pretty stable believe it or not. It's a pretty heavy piece. You have to realize that the age of an infant put into one of these would be that of one who doesn't move around much at all. Once a baby starts to be able to roll over and all, I would imagine the parents abandoned using it for them. The rim does rock, but there is also a locking mechanism on it to keep it from rocking. I'm sure too that it wouldn't pass today's safety standards.

Yes, it is.

She doesn't want it. I told her if I could get it sold, I'd give her the money. I emailed pics of it to one local antique dealer, but she hasn't responded. It has been several weeks.

When you issue a recall and give the full price back for an item that is several years old, there's no profit to keep up. Cribs and car seats are a major profit loser, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of the manufacturers quit the business.

Shoot, if I was close by she could sell it to me!
Reminds me of the old film 'Rosemary's Baby'; it would look fabulous done up in black with a devil child in it for Halloween.
Good luck finding a new home for it---it really is a wonderful piece.

I LOVE that idea! My one my fave parts of that movie--sooo creepy!

BTW, the hook thing probably had some sort of curtains--perhaps even net ones--to keep bugs off the baby.
