Just a couple of pics I managed to get on here.
He needs to put on maybe 35-40 lbs.

What a gorgeous bay, and he does look BIG!!! Look at those withers, he does need to put on a few pounds though. He will fatten up quickly eating all of that grass. I just love hand-grazing horses, to me that is the most relaxing thing in the world. The munch, munch, munch is so soothing.
Congratulations and can't wait to hear how things are progressing

I don't think he needs any more weight on him, looks fine the way he is. You want to feel ribs with a small amount of pressure and maybe see some when he moves. He's my favourite colour, plain bay and he is a LOT cleaner than Dirt Pile who wallows in mud and there is lots for wallowing.

The owner of the barn says 100 lbs is what he needs.

His withers is so pronounced. Yesterday there were gusts up to 40mph. I have been around other horses who spook in the wind....my 9 yr old grand daughter was on him being led by dh. He just took it all in stride.

Yes, the ripping of the grass out of the ground and munching is very theraputic. I think if more people grazed a horse once in a while, there would be less need for blood pressure pills!

Thanks for all your nice remarks about our new boy!

Thanks again everyone!

He is a bay, but he has lots of copper in the color. He has kind eyes. I always look at their eyes first, and his were just so kind.

We are pretty sure he has a good deal of thoroughbred in him and maybe quarter horse. The gang at the barn have given opinions, even the farrier. They all concur on the TB. It's funny, because we always skipped the ads with TB listed as the breed. I didn't want a warm blood.

But he is sure a darling. DH had him on the road yesterday. It isn't a busy road at all, just a country road. He did wonderfully. Then a dump truck with wood shavings was backing in to dump in the barn. Big Al just stood watching the bed rise and all the shavings pouring out 10 feet from him. Again, just watched.

We were over to the barn 5 times. The neighbor said he was going to charge us a toll!

The vet is coming out next week to check his teeth. But I just love him.
He already recognizes our voice when we call out "hey Al". Up goes his head.

You are all so nice to say such nice things about our boy.
We have been so busy, I feel like I am neglecting TCS! I have to get back in the loop!

Sounds like
love to me
!!!! Horses catch on quickly as to who their owners are. My horse always knew my car, my keys jingling or even my footsteps walking up the aisle to his stall and he would always call out to me. I love thoroughbreds and have owned and trained four over the last twenty five years. They are all heart and very intelligent. Very happy for you and your family, a horse is such a gift and special animal. Happy riding

I'd never heard of that - it's really cool!
Al sounds like such a sweetheart - very phlegmatic!

It is a good way to tell the age of a horse. The Galvaynes groove appears in the upper corner incisor teeth. It usually starts to appear at age seven and disappears around age twenty or so. Have fun today with Big Al!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks...cleaned out his stall this am. Put him out in the ring while I was working.

He is a chow hound! He had just pretty much been on pasture. Now he gets fed 3 times a day and grained twice. But only a 1/4 scoop. We may cut that back to one time. Gave him a dab of molassas in his grain bowl yesterday.

Needless to say he loved it!
But am switching treats from apple tasting bits to carrots. The apple things made him crazy for more. Carrots are not as addictive!
