Cat is now using our bed as her potty?

I adopted my year-old cat on St. Patrick's day. She was abandoned by her owners when they upped and moved to avoid paying $5,000 in back rent. For two months she was an outdoor cat who desperately wanted to be indoors. She's a total sweetheart, and seems perfectly content with being indoors with the occasional peak outside the front door. I have a leash and harness for her so I can let her adventure further out without running into the busy street, but she doesn't seem to show much interest.

I set up a litter box with some clay litter in the bathroom of my one bedroom apartment (bedroom doesn't have a door, so there isn't any restricting her to an area except for the nice-sized bathroom). She took to the litter box instantly, which was nice, but I had to clean up after her instantly or my apartment would smell like poop as she refuses to cover it, and frequently would get her whole body into the litter box and poop on the edge/floor.

I decided that since she doesn't cover her poop anyway, that I would try toilet training her. It's only $30, so I figured it would work and my problems would be solved, or I would have just wasted $30. Please don't lecture me on how "unnatural" it is for a cat to use the toilet. Cats naturally go after birds, devastating bird populations. Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's good, and no harm is coming to her using the toilet.

It has been 3 months, and she pees and poops in the pan. She didn't originally want to poop in the pan after removing two rings, but the problem there was that I was moving too fast for her so I went back and now she poops in the pan most of the time. Occasionally she'll poop on the floor or in the tub, but after bleaching and scrubbing the floor, she has stopped pooping on the floor, and after jumping in the tub while the shower head was on, she's nixed pooping in the shower.

This past Memorial Day weekend, my husband and I left for my parent's for 2 nights and 3 days. I left her 3 big bowls of water, and 3 bowls of food. I had a friend come check in on her, but she came in the evening of the day we left, and didn't bother to come back in the middle of the weekend when I had actually asked her to. The cat filled her pan with pee and poop, and then left three more piles next to my husband's side of the bed.

I cleaned her box, the piles of poop, and scrubbed the poop pile area with Resolve for pets. I put new litter in her box (a mix of clay and flushable litter that she likes) and showed it to her. She continued to use the toilet pan.

My husband and I are both military, and the next day he has "duty" which means he has to stay overnight on his ship. When he has duty, I think the bed feels way too lonely so I sleep on the cozy, comfy couch. Apparently my cat thought this would be prime opportunity to nestle herself in his side of the bed and pee -- coating our sheets, a comforter, a mink blanket, and 2 pillows. I managed to throw the sheets in the wash, and sprayed resolve for pets and anibacterial fabreeze all over the place, and locked her in the bathroom with her toys, covered bed, and food for the day because I work 12 hour shifts and I didn't trust her alone with my bed.

When we got home I let her run around the apartment. She didn't return to the bed to relieve herself while we were there. The next morning (this morning), my husband wakes up and gets out of bed. I have off so I lay there for a while longer. I get up to feed the cat because she's bouncing off the walls for me to feed her, and not long after she starts meowing and running all around the floor on his side of the bed and over the bed. She would lay in the bed and look at me, and if I moved at all, she would bolt. She was sniffing and running all over the place and meowing frantically, so I picked her up and set her on the toilet. She positioned herself on the seat and pooped instantly.

I'm so confused as to why she's doing this now. :/ I mean, is she still mad at us for going away for the weekend? Is she mad at my husband for leaving and not coming home every night (because, that's obviously not going to change, and deployments aren't optional either!) Or has she just decided that the bed was a prime place to relieve herself? BTW, her pee looks perfectly fine (No crystals or anything in it), and her personality hasn't changed. I don't want to be paranoid that she's going to relieve herself on my bed from now on!

Also, I am saving money on the side for a CatGenie. If she doesn't adapt to the toilet by the time I have saved up for one, I'm going to go ahead and get it. Having a normal litter box just isn't an option for this cat in our tiny apartment. lol

Hi, and welcome!

Cats don't get mad and hold grudges or try to get revevge. Something else is going on.

There are a number of articles and stickies on this site that can help you with this problem.

Briefly, what you are using to clean up won't work. The cat can still smell it and will continue to go there until you use an enzyme cleaner like Nok Out. You can get it on line. Petsmart carries an enzyme cleaner, too, Also there is Nature's Miracle, but a lot of people say it doesn't work. You have to really soak the area soiled, and let it dry over several days.

Much of the time when a cat starts this behavior it is because she has a UTI. So please get your cat checked for this by a vet as it is painful, can be fatal, and the behavior won't stop,

I have no experience with toilet training a cat, nor have I ever known anyone who did so. Seems like it would be difficult to do with most cats,

Some cats are afraid of those automatic cleaning pans. At this point, with the problems you are having, you need a large open pan with Cat Attack litter. You probably need to keep your cat confined with this (and food, water, bedding, and toys) in the bathroom to retrain her. Except when you take her or to cuddle and play.

Later, when the problem is behind you, I recommend a large litter pan, with good litter that you scoop once or twice a day. You could try a covered pan, but again, many cats don't like them, so they won't use them.

Good luck!

I washed the sheets she used, and made the bed. She hasn't tried to go back to it since. I'm so confused. lol

Generally, eliminating outside the box is the cat's way of telling you something's not right. I would take her to the vet to rule out any type of infection, then put her in the bathroom and retrain her to use the litter box.

Vet says she's fine, and a regular litter box is out of the question because she refuses to cover up her poop, leaving me to have to clean it up almost instantly or allowing it to stink up our one bedroom apartment.

At this point, she's pooping in the toilet with a big enough hole in it that it goes right into the toilet. She went almost a week without an incident... when last night we accidentally locked her out of the bathroom while we were in the shower and she pooped on the floor next to my husband's side of the bed again.

Then this morning, after I got back from my run, I discovered that she had dug up a potted plant we got a week ago and pooped in the soil. She's dug into the soil a couple times and only made a HUGE mess, but she's hadn't pooped in it before. Is there something I can spray on this plant to keep her from even going near it anymore? :/

Carnivalcat,
Unfortunately, she is telling you your system is not working for her. Cats are this way... the way they communicate their disapproval with the litterbox/system is by pooping peeing outside of it (provided that a urinalysis was done and showed no infection/crystals, and there is nothing wrong with her poop)
I know you don't want to have a regular box - but do you want poop and pee on the floor? Because ultimately, that is what is going to come down to.
Many, many of us live in one bedroom apartments - including me. I live in a one bedroom apartment, and have 3 uncovered litterboxes - I rather have that than pee and poop all over. That I can not live with it.
You can try a different box, such as the Booda Dome litter box, if you want a good covered one. I would not recommend any other covered system as far as covered goes.
There is nothing wrong with toilet training, as long as it works for your cat... But if it is not working, then IMHO you have to change things... look for another solution... She is obviously not liking it, and most likely you are not going to be able to solve this.
I would get a traditional box, fill with Cat attract litter, and go from there. If you want covered, get the Booda Dome. A large uncovered, even though unsightly, would be your best bet.
I would also recommending getting a black light so you can seen all the pee and poop spots - then a good enzyme cleaner such as Nok Out or anti-icky poo.
Spraying Feliway in the planter can help her not pooping in it....
Good luck!

Yes, your dear kitty is telling you, loud and clear, the only way she can, that what you are offering isn't working for her.

Take baby steps and all these problems can be solved. First she needs to be trained to use a litter pan that is acceptable to her so she stops soiling inappropriately.

Get TWO big, low sided storage bins (they're cheap), put them in two different places in your apartment, and use Cat Attract litter (it makes a difference). Get the Nok Out, and maybe a black light, and once and for all clean up the places she's been soiling. This setup can be temporary, just until the problem is solved. Get those odor absorbing gels in jars to help you. And scoop often.

Once this problem is solved, if she still isn't covering her poop, then you can explore other options. There is even furniture for storing litter pans, with a cat door. Or you van make your own. But that's down the road.

You may have to confine her to the bathroom to retrain her, as I said before.

These things you have been advised to do here do work.

All this depends on her being absolutely free of any physical problem.

If toilet training a cat usually worked, we'd all (well, not all, but a lot) be doing it.

I'm hoping for the best for you and your cat.

A dear friend told me - cats need to dig and to cover up pee and poop! Your cat is telling you your system does not work. I have 2 cats and two boxes in one small bedroom apartment. One regular with crystal litter and one 'Breeze' box. Works well as each cat prefers their own and at their level of comfort.

No one touched on the 'memorial weekend from hell' but it's mighty lax of you to let the situation get that bad. Change how you treat your cat and she will not treat your whole place as her personal litter box.
