I swore I would never get involved with iTunes, but now they have something I can only get from them. Which irritates me, but oh well. So, my question is, if I buy something from iTunes, is it mine or am I only borrowing it and will lose it if I get rid of the iTunes software? Can I put it on an mp3 player that isn't an iPod? Or burn it to a CD? Most important, can I buy something without having to have them keep my credit card number on file forever? I might just go buy one of those gift cards, but only if I'm going to be able to keep the music.

Yes, it is yours to keep. The file is downloaded to your computer into an iTunes folder. You can move the file wherever you want after it downloads. And you can use the file even if you don't have iTunes on your computer. Also, the file forever remains at iTunes, so if you lose it, you can redownload it again.

Can I put it on an mp3 player that isn't an iPod? Or burn it to a CD?

Yes, you can use the file on any MP3 player and you can burn the file to a CD or DVD.

Yes. You have control whether you want your credit card kept on file or not.

I might just go buy one of those gift cards, but only if I'm going to be able to keep the music.

Gift cards will also work there. And again, yes, you are buying the music, not renting it. It's just like if you were to go into a store and buy a CD. It's yours!

If you burn it to a CD, then rip the file from the CD back to your harddrive it will get rid of all the permissions so you can send the files to other people, etc.

Thanks you both for the information. I had an unpleasant experience with iTunes once
I guess its time to take the plunge again.

I downloaded iTunes and tried to set up an account. It would not let me get past the enter a credit card screen, which comes up before you even choose something to buy. This is exactly what happened last time and it was months before I could get them to remove my credit card information from the account. Which is why I swore I would never get involved with it again. I'll have to decide if I want the music badly enough to go purchase a gift card and hope I can figure out how to use it without giving them my credit card information, because it looks like you can't even set up an account without it. It may just be that I'm stupid, but I can't stand these sites that stick their hooks in you one way or another and you can't get free.
