This last week I have noticed Pipsqueak going in and out of the box more often than usual. Pee clumps were normal size on one day and then another were much smaller. Also, his poops have gotten awfully hard like rocks, constipated or hairball. So I think there are two issues going on here. I ran a urine sample to the vet this morning and it came back with blood. I have an appointment today at noon and will run full blood work as well. I have a pit in my stomach as he has never been sick or has any health problems before. I just feel like crying...and am so worried. Please send any vibes you can spare my way. I would appreciate it.

Tons of
for Pipsqueak. Constipation sometimes does happen with a UTI. |
. We just got home. There are no crystals in the urine, but blood. There are three possibilities, #1 Bacterial, #2 Stone, but then crystals would be in the urine, #3 idiopathic, stress related. The vet did put him on Baytril. But, Pipsqueak is a high strung kitty and gets stressed out very easily and it is possible that the stress goes right to his bladder. The baytril will cover any possible bacterial UTI too. It is possible too that the constipation goes along with the UTI, especially if Pip is not drinking enough water. I do have a fountain and lots of water bowls. He eats grain-free canned with only about 1/4 of his diet is dry grain-free. My vet does not think this has anything to do with diet. We also took blood to do a full work-up, this will ease my mind too. I will get the results on Tuesday. In two weeks, another urinalysis. If still blood, we will then x-ray the bladder. For the constipation, more fiber. I will get some metamucil and/or canned pumpkin. I am having trouble finding just plain canned pumpkin. So I am going to Trader Joe's to see if they carry it. The vaseline I will only give twice a week as I don't want it to interfere with absorbtion of the medication or nutrients.
I love that I have TCS

and the support of all of you
which will help me through anything with my furbabies. He is my BABY and I love him to death. So I was a wreck this morning, but now I feel a bit better. I need to watch him closely and monitor his box use carefully.

that the Baytril does the trick. My vet recommends a little heavy/whipping cream for constipation. I put a splash of it in some "cat milk", so now Jamie expects at least a couple of drops in his daily Whiskas milk.

. I will try the cream
, thanks. It was so funny when I got home with Pip. Perla puffed up at the smell in the air

. Pip had run downstairs to his safety spot on the couch. Then Presley ran after him like, WHERE DID YOU GO??????? Then Perla, all puffed up, went down the stairs in slow motion.
. When she S-L-O-W-L-Y approached the couch where Presley was sniffing Pip. She carefully got on the couch to investigate Pip, then took one sniff, and hissed and swatted Presley
. In the meantime, Perkins had woken from his nap, and was coming down the stairs wondering what all the hoopla was about. Perla took one look at Perkins, who was sitting on the steps yawning trying to wake up, and B-lined straight for him, He freaked and they both raced up the stairs all puffed up
. Well, now they are all happily sleeping on my bed, and snuggling up like nothing ever happenned. They make me so happy, my little darlings.Pip is all wiped out from his ordeal today. He was very, very stressed out. OH NO that poor bladder.

Oh, lots of vibes for getting a specific diagnosis...sounds like you're treating all the symptoms and sometimes that's all you and the vet can do for the moment. My boy had crystals, so I understand box patrol. I hope he feels better very soon, and that you both get a good night's sleep.

You can save a ton of money and use regular lactaid milk found in your dairy aisle instead of Whiskas milk. It's so much cheaper.

Thanks everyone!!! Yes, Robin, the storms have been causing stress as usual. Especially because Henry, my old JRT, has severe anxiety from storms and then Pipsqueak gets all upset that Henry is acting so strange. You see, Pipsqueak does have some very odd behavior. He patrols the house, if anything gets out of control, he immediately blames the dogs (no matter what the commotion, he blames the dogs) and goes for them. Poor old dogs......
. If someone comes to ring the doorbell, Pipsqueak goes off again. If I am out front of the house and he is looking out the window and I approach the window, he hisses and hisses. I don't know why he doesn't know it's me, but he is very protective of the house. But, if the feral's come up by the window, he could care less
. Just the other day, I accidentally knocked over a full cup of coffee I just poured in the kitchen, I yelled out..... OH S***. Pip came tearing in the kitchen and attacked Wilbur. He has always been this way, but it seems to be getting worse as he gets older. We have learned to try to just keep things at home, peaceful and quiet. He loves the other cats, and doesn't seem to ever mind fosters either. But he cannot tolerate loud noises or anyone making an "ouch" noise. So, this is an anxiety/control issue he has and this can bring on the UTI and inflame his bladder. That being said, we are not sure the Baytril will do anything, but it won't hurt. In two weeks, I will run the urinalysis again, if still blood, then I know it wasn't bacterial, and at that point we will x-ray the bladder.
He did have a slightly better poop today.
. So the metamucil is helping (thanks everyone for the other suggestions too for constipation, I am writing it all down as it is good to know) And I am adding more warm water to the wet food, he loves to lap it all up. He is feeling better today and so am I. I am just giving him lots of extra love and keeping the house quiet and stress free as best I can.

Lauren, I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner (I tend to stay away from the health forum because it usually upsets me).
Anyway, it sounds as if Pip is feeling better, which obviously means you're feeling better, too. Hope he continues to improve. Sending lots of 'get well soon' vibes to your little guy.

Just got a call from my vet and Pip's bloodwork was excellent!!!! So that is fantastic news and I am relieved. I will pick up a copy later so I can look it over too. He is still going to the box a little too often, but his pee clumps are a fairly good size. I am pumping water into him by adding it to his wet meals so he might be needing to go more due to that. His poops are still quite firm/hard but at least it is more than one hard poop coming out.

So in a couple of weeks, after he finishes the antibiotic, I will get another urine test done and go from there. Hopefully, it will have no blood
. Thanks, my TCS friends, for your support. It means alot to me

Oh, yay! Always reassuring to get a good report. I'm waiting on Dante's, but I figure with the holiday weekend, they may be backed up...and I'm figuring that the 'bad' reports will surface first, so maybe it's good to be waiting!

Well at least his blood work looked great!
...when we switched the cats to (mostly) all wet, the amount of peeing went up a LOT, so I expect some of it may be the additional liquids you're pumping through him.
I'm trying to remember back to when Spooky had a flare up of her cystitis... they did not put her on baytril - it was a different antibiotic. I can call and find out if you like. But basically the vet said that the primary reason for giving it was because it acts as an anti-inflammatory, and she prefers to see if that works (as it also can stomp out an infection) rather than use steroids. It did the trick for Spook (and thankfully no flare ups since then. Knock wood).

Hi Feralvr, hoping Pipsqueak continues to get better!
I get pumpkin in the bakery isle in the market - close to the pies' crusts, for some reason it is never ever by the canned vegetables, just a tip!
Also, I know changing diets is hard.... But A grain free dry diet combined with grain free wet diet can be UTI trouble for males..... it was for Bugsy. Changing at least the dry for grains helps a lot. The wet usually can remain grain free.
For some reason Sharky used to say that Corn and Chicken meal worked well together for UTI management - now, don't ask me why... I am not an expert on that one. What I know is if you feed dry, one with grain is better than grain free in avoiding UTIs... Now, of course not feeding dry at all would be best, but not all of us can do that.... me included - Bugsy would skin me alive on that one!

anything would be a help. I have to find out why he has the blood in his urine and be able to rectify this immediately. I sure hope this round of meds clears it up. I will be a bit anxious till the next urinalysis. Thanks for your support

Thanks Carolina, I did look in the bakery aisle near pie crusts but it was the spiced pumpkin for pie filling. Is that what is used? No, it is the plain, but it is usually where I can find... Whole foods, walmart (the supermarket), kroger... These three for example. All have in the baking Isle. Shouldn't it be plain pumpkin? right - the plain. Also, I did just find out that Wellness Core dry can cause some UTI issues for some cats and Pipsqueak has been on that since last October. So I switched to EVO dry which is toooooo rich for them so the next bag will be Innova which does have some grain. yep, grain free is a no no... I would definitely make sure he has grain in his diet, especially in his dry. They do get three quarters of their food all wet. good!

At Jewel, the plain pumpkin is in the canned vegetable A
aisle. But, there is often a shortage of this stuff. And it's really the wrong season for it.
Curiously, most pumpkin that ends up canned is grown in Illinois. If the late summer and fall weather is too cool or wet, OR SOMETHING, the crop is poor. Seems like that has occurred the last couple of years.
But I'll keep an eye out for it.
