I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett and his Diskworld series. I've read about 30 of them. Well, not read, in all cases; I've downloaded them and listened to the audiobook version of many of them.

I just finished "Monstrous Regiment."

I would have to say, ladies, that if you're going to read one of these books, this is it. There is a basic joke to the book, but it keeps getting twisted around every corner, to the very last page. And it's especially suited for girls (and women).

I love Terry Pratchett! It is difficult to say which one I like best, they are all hilarious and very clever. As to what type of fantasy they are, they are not really scifi, nor alien, though there are elements of both genres. They are spoofs, parodies of aspects of our own lives, all set on a world that is being carried through space on the back of a giant turtle. There is magic involved, witches, dwarves, vampires and other strange species, but also humans. The professors at Unseen University try to control things but usually fail. Each book takes something familiar to us and twists it round within the limits of Discworld, producing ribsplitting results and offering a new way of looking at our world. Politics, war, Hollywood, the world of finance, the press, the construction industry, the arts, literary success, sport, education, tourism, feminism, death are all featured in different books. I do recommend them. It is very sad that Pratchett is now suffering from Alzheimers and htere will be no more of them.
