My in-laws' cat was diagnosed with cancer today, after just a few days of vomiting and some rapid weight loss. It's in his kidney and it is, apparently, some rare form.

The cat is between five and eight years old, he's been neutered and declawed and that's all we all know - someone literally dumped him at my in-laws' property, along with our cat. (They adopted a feral as well.)

Anyway.

The vet said there wasn't much they could do because transplantation wouldn't make sense at this point. I suggested removal of that kidney, but that's, at this point, up in the air, too. They drained all the excess fluid from his kidney today (which was instant relief for the cat) and he was given a cortisone shot. Has to go in for another in three weeks. Meanwhile, he is supposed to be on a wet, prescription diet.

According to the vet, we all just wait now. My first guess, judging by the simptoms, was renal failure, but, even though I was remotely close, it really is a huge tumor.

Is there anything else that could be done, or brought up for consideration?

Grey Dude is not really doing better, but the vet has been helping him not suffer, at least. Or that's what they say.

There's a chance his liver is affected as well, but at this point, they are not certain. He is on a special prescription diet and is to be kept away from any kibble or other herd(er) to digest foods.

Next week, he's going in for another steroid shot and yesterday they drained some more fluids from his abdominal area (and did some ultrasound scans and x-rays).

The doctor keeps saying the cat likely isn't in pain, so for now... we're all just hoping for the best. He doesn't act miserable either, even seems more playful and affectionate than normal.

That is one gorgeous kitty, Kittica. I'm sorry, I don't have any advice, but I'm praying for all of you.

Thanks.

That big cat from that picture is about half that size now, but he's hanging in there!

We hope he'll somehow make it through.

Dude is, unfortunately as expected, not getting better at all. He keeps losing weight and he sheds like crazy. He's on a prescription diet, but is being spoon fed now, pretty much. He still enjoys a slow walk around the house and now naps a lot, too.

He's having a vet appointment one of these days and then we'll find out what to do next. He doesn't seem to be suffering, at least.
