I thought I would share with you a wonderful news article about the shelter I foster for and all of the wonderful things the new executive director is doing to improve the shelter and the lives of all of the animals in our city!
The article is primarily promoting the current fundraising campaign the shelter has going on (I have my tickets!
) but it also talks about some of the great changes that have been made.

I'm not sure that refusing owner surrenders is entirely "on the right track" (and I hope there's another shelter in the area to take them), but it's good they're taking better care of the animals now.

No, there isn't, but this way it is forcing people to be responsible for their OWN animals instead of just dumping them on the shelter. If the people want to rehome the animal, it is THEIR responsibility to do so, not the shelter's. Of course there are always extenuating circumstances to this, along with the fact that people lie all the time saying "It's not mine, it's a stray who's been hanging out here." and there is really nothing the shelter can do to prove otherwise so they take them in.

I know that a lot of people will say "Well the people will just dump the animals anyway." but for the majority of people that isn't the case at all, and what is the better alternative, forcing people to take responsibility or the shelter having to resort back to euthanasia because they just don't have the space, resources, etc. to provide for them all? If there isn't a particular "dumping ground" for the animals, most people will do the right thing and find them another home on their own or find ways to keep the animals themselves. The shelter is trying to educate that animals are not just disposable objects that people can drop off when they are no longer convenient.

Fantastic shelter!!! I love the cat room in the photo. How nice for all of the cats. The shelter I work with has a large cat room as well, with those wall walkway ramps that go to overhead walkway too. I sure hope the fundraiser brings all of your shelter's dreams to life
