Need quick advice - more storms soon

There are severe storms here in OK again, with several tornadoes already and loss of life. These storms are headed my way in a couple hours.

My question is about the boys. They will be in the bathroom with us if the sirens go off again, but I'm wondering about putting them in their carriers. I did night before last when we had the last one but want to get your opinion about that.

My thoughts were that the carrier may help protect them from debris, etc., but now I'm wondering if they would be safer if they are just in the bathroom with us? I know if something startles them, or is dropped near them they are way faster than us at reacting and getting out of the way.

I would appreciate all your thoughts on this asap.

I'd put them in carriers. Just makes me think they'd be more protected & god forbid if something should happen they'd be contained.

and they would be eaiser to get out quickly if needed in their carriers

I am sorry you are going through this and I am afraid I am wondering about the same thing myself... Have been wondering today throughout the day....
Our weather is not that bad as yours right now, just a tornado watch at the moment, and we have been in and out of tornado watches and warnings, severe thunderstorms galore, and it can change on a dime as you know being in there.
We have no basement, my bath tube is by a window, so my best bet is the corridor. I only have two carriers, so I better take care of the other two soon...
I suppose I have to put name tags on them in case they fly away or something too... The weather this year is really scary.... Can't believe I will leave Dallas to be hit by this tomorrow in Chicago -
Be safe ovethere...

It would be too easy for them to escape from out of the tub - even if you were in there with them. I think they would panic a lot more if you were trying to hold them down, than if they were in the carriers.

I hope you'll be okay!

Put them in carriers. If something really spooks them, they will fight you to get away and go into deep hiding. Mine all went into hiding the day my last house caught fire when we were running around trying to put it out. Loud noises scare them.

I just pulled up the weather.com map for our area. We are both going to get whacked by that long storm front that is across Oklahoma and Kansas right now. We've been told that there will probably be tornadoes here tonight also.

MSNBC has good storm coverage on what's going on in Oklahoma right now. They've switched to local news coverage and have films of the tornadoes live. They're outside Oklahoma City right now.

I think I'll hunker down in the basement tonight with all the kids.

I would think putting the cats in the carriers would be better too. They can be really good at scratching their way out of your arms if spooked.

Best wishes to stay safe everyone!!!

This was just on CNN.
I agree with the others, carriers.

Sending major "be safe" vibes.

Hey Paula - If you don't lose power, can you please post once the storms have passed you by?

I wish we had a basement or knew someone who did Its dumb that they aren't really all that common in tornado alley huh?

I will put the boys in the carriers when it gets close. Unfortunately I have only one hard carrier and one soft one.

Amy - this line of storms is all up in your area too. Be safe
post #11 of 63
Yes, I would put them in carriers. I think that would be safest. Hard carriers I'm thinking.

With 5 cats, some not cooperative, I've been contemplating what I'd do. I probably couldn't get them all in carriers, or even to the basement, but I'd do my best.

Best wishes and good luck to all!

When we have severe weather like this, I park the carriers in the hallway by the closet and plan on putting the kitties in their carriers as we head into the closet. Don't forget to keep a stash of food & bottled water for them, too.
I'm going to sign off for the night and herd the kids to the basement. I heard the first bit of thunder a few minutes ago and the bad part of the storm is about 45 minutes away. We're under a tornado watch until 3AM here, but they are saying the threat of a tornado is still moderate here.

Everyone stay safe! I'll try to post in the morning before I head out to work at 5:30. I'm going to try to just sleep thru this storm.

As far as I know, Texas hasn't been hit by anything. They keep saying 'tornadic winds' but nothing actually Happening. Idk, we are in an area that never gets tornadoes so I'm not worried about it. Usually only half of what the weather channel says actually happens.
Prayers for those in tornado alley however.

Are you watching the news?
There have been so many tornados touchdowns tonight that is not funny... I am with my friends who are stuck in a safe room in the middle of tornadoes in Denton right at this minute.... I am keeping him posted by text as they lost TV... Turn to channel 21... Unless you are in the South, you better watch...

I hope everyone is safe.

We had a tornado warning last night and I was concerned about something. We had no rain, no really high winds but a warning nonetheless. There was no siren that sounded and nothing on the TV. I was watching NCIS on USA and the cable company did not put out a warning. I know they do because sometimes when I fall asleep with the TV on, the EBS test warning comes on once a week. I didn't know there were warnings out until this morning when I got a text from my manager making sure we were all ok.
