Need Some Opinions

I found out thru the local animal shelter that there is gonna be a pet fair this coming Saturday, and I've been thinking about taking the foster kittens there in hopes of finding a home for them - but I'm not sure if I want to go that route - due to the fact that I'd have no way of knowing if whether or not they'd be going to a good home. Unfortunately, I'm not a very good judge of character sometimes, and any Joe Blow could come along and take them and they'd possibly end up going to a potentially abusive home.

What would y'all do? Take a chance and take them to the pet fair in hopes of finding a home for them? I really can't keep them much longer: I've already kept them much longer than I had originally planned on doing....

Do you have to send them home at that time? At pet fairs here, the rescue groups use the same adoption policies they normally have. Most make you fill out an adoption application - with vet references and stuff, and they make their calls, and then let you know. Any reason you can't do that?

Do you have a printer? I can e-mail you an application.

Laurie, I really don't know if whether or not I have to let them go at the time of the pet fair: the lady I spoke with at the animal shelter didn't specify. I could contact her again and ask just exactly how the pet fair operates. I just assumed that whoever wanted to adopt the kitten was allowed to do so if you decided to turn them over.

Agree! A lot of the local rescues do pet fairs here, but they are more a meet and greet and learn about the available rescues and the rescue itself! They do not let the pets go home that day! But it is a great chance for people to get to know the animals from more than a picture and a half page of info!

I agree with all LDG said. And you need to charge them, enough so that people think twice - whatever the going rate is for kittens in your area. If they haven't been spayed or neutered, that has to be a condition. And that has to be in writing, that they sign, and you have to check up on this. They have to know you are going to check, with the vet, and if they don't do it, you will come take the kitten back.

I hope this works out. Another thought, the good (no-kill) shelters around here never turn away kittens. They spay/neuter them, give shots, test for diseases, de-worm and de-flea, and screen adopters. Kittens with all this cost $100-$200, depending on the shelter.

Yep any shelter I have ever dealth with has at least a 24 hour waiting period to process the adoption application (check referances, call their vet, landlord, etc.) and also by making the people wait 24 hours it helps deter any impulse adoptions where people might not be 100% serious. I would hope this shelter is the same way, and if so, I say go for it! Good luck!

I don't know what the deal is around here with these shelters, but I always get the same response every time I contact them to take in a stray/abandoned cat/kitten - "We're filled up". It really ticks me off! I don't know if they're being honest, or just don't want to take in the cats. I realize that they most likely ARE filled up at this time of year with all the kittens being born, but every time I contact them? I guess we don't have a decent shelter in this area...

I'm glad y'all are giving me some feedback. I've never done anything like this before, so I'm at a loss. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Maybe rather than calling the shelter, you could just take them there, tell them you found them, and be clear and assertive that you can't take care of them anymore, and you don't know how to find them homes. People do this at my shelter everyday, and the policy is to never refuse kittens, no matter how full up.

Of course you've got to be careful about the shelter you are dealing with.

Speaking of the foster kittens, here's the most current batch of pix. I know how y'all like seeing updates of them. They were taken about a week ago:















Don't ask me which one is which: I still can't tell them apart! They all look identical to me.

Now they'll come and sit next to me on the sink if I'm sitting on the toilet, and rub up against me - purring like crazy the whole time. How the heck am I supposed to try giving them up?!

I just may end up having to do that, if this pet fair thing doesn't work out. I've already told them of my circumstances and that I can't continue to keep them, but then they'll tell me if I bring them in they'll end up being put to sleep. I sometimes wonder if they just say that to lay a guilt trip on me so I'll continue to keep them.

I would try the pet fair route first. It is worth a try and you might really find super homes for the kittens and someone might even want two together. Get that application from Laurie. You just have to check references and vets. And add in the spay/neuter stipulation. Also since the pet fair is through the shelter, they should have all of the paperwork/contracts with them for you to use. I am sure they would assist you in placing the kittens that day. Just call them tomorrow and ask some more questions about it! I think this might be a good thing

My gosh aren't they cute?!

You can try out the pet fair, make sure you keep an eye on them though in their kennel so nobody steals them. We have taken kittens to pet fairs/adoption events at my shelter that I work with. They do not go home from the pet fair, period.

We have them fill out an application first, then go from there. If they aren't not fixed yet, I would personally fix them before going to their new homes if you can, that way you don't have to worry about that also.
