What do you think about this canned food?

Hello,
I finally found a canned food that my cat loves and that I can afford She is an overweight lady and we over time we have been trying to switch to an all canned diet - she get some kibble TOTW as my other cat is a dry food addict (the only canned she will touch is FF chicken pate, and I have to finger feed her that 2 times a day!)
The large cat will pretty much eat most wet food, she does prefer it to dry but it's hard for me to afford the high end cans. I buy some when they are on sale but I needed something to always have on hand. It's called Dave's and I pay $1.59 for a 12.5 ounce can. She loves both flavors and doesn't seem to ever get bored with it. Here are the ingredients:

Turkey recipe:

Turkey, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Chicken, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Cranberries, Blueberries, Zucchini, Potassium Chloride, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Taurine, Iron Proteinate (source of Chelated Iron), Beta-carotene, Zinc, Proteinate (source of Chelated Zinc), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Proteinate (source of Chelated Copper), Folic Acid, Manganese Proteinate (source of Chelated Manganese), Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide and Biotin.

Chicken recipe:

Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Poultry, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Cranberries, Blueberries, Potassium Chloride, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Taurine, Iron Proteinate (source of Chelated Iron), Beta-carotene, Zinc, Proteinate (source of Chelated Zinc), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Proteinate (source of Chelated Copper), Folic Acid, Manganese Proteinate (source of Chelated Manganese), Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide and Biotin.

It's not advertised as grain free (what is the grain in here?) they also carry 3 ounce grain free flavors but she didn't really like those as much.

It looks like a high quality food to me - especially for that price. I wish it were sold near where I live.

One thing I wonder about it though, is how much taurine is in it? Taurine is listed in the ingrediants, but not from what I can see in the guarenteed analysis.

I'm glad you are switching to feeding your one all wet food Mikey would also only eat the Fancy Feast Chicken Pate food (he was also a kibble addict) but he eventually broadened his horizons. Have you tried not leaving dry food available to your kibble addict - and just feeding 2-3 meals a day - and offer the canned before you offer the dry at the meals?

Hmm, none of my wet foods have taurine in the guaranteed analysis part of the label. Anyone else?

Some do and some don't. It just makes me a bit concerned - especially when it is not even listed on their website in the guarenteed analysis. For the cans it could be an issue of not enough room on the can to write it, but there is no excuse, IMO, to not list it on their website.

Here's what I feed my boys: Blue Wilderness canned. Taurine isn't listed in the guaranteed analysis.

EVO doesn't have it on the website, either. Innova does. It was my understanding that EVO & Blue were both high quality canned cat foods. Should I be concerned that taurine isn't included in the guaranteed analysis?

EVO does - it is 0.07% and listed under the nutrient analysis tab instead. I don't see it on Blue's site either. It is in the ingredients, so it has to be there. I'm just a bit overly obsessive when it comes to knowing what is in the food That's why I am concerned when I don't see taurine listed on the guarenteed/nutrient analysis...though most people probably aren't concerned as long as it is an ingrediant.

I contacted Blue Buffalo and asked how much taurine there is.

Since there is a minimum level of taurine required by AAFCO standards, I don't worry about the exact amount. . .not sure why anyone would, unless their cat needed more than usual. If the food is AAFCO certified and taurine is listed in the ingredients, there's no reason to worry about, IMO.

I agree. Both those foods look good to me and I would feed them to my cat without hesitation.

Bijou has lost 5 pounds (only 3 left to go) by simply going to an all wet diet and being fed morning and night. He eagerly awaits his meals and eats it all so I need not worry about it staying out too long. He did not eat it all when I first starting feeding wet but now when meal time comes he is hungry and finishes it off.

In reply to Furryfriends50 - I don't free fee at all they both get fed in the morning, at 5pm and then another small meal later at night. I always offer Luigi (kibble addict) the canned and she has been taking it a little more eagerly over time. This morning she even ate a little of the Dave's chicken canned on her own! So maybe it's possible one day she will be all canned too I know sometimes I do give her kibble just because I don't have enough time to sit there and beg her to eat and finger feed her lol. She is a little brat - she will sit next to me stare and put her paw up like she's trying to show me - feed me with your hand. BTW Luigi has a boy name because I took her in as a 1 day old stray and was told by the vet she was a boy only to get a surprise at her 6 week checkup that really she is a girl. Maybe she likes to be finger fed since I've bottle fed her since she was born....

If anyone is interested I actually buy this food online here:
http://www.waggintails.com/p-228-dav...25oz-cans.aspx

They always have coupons available right on the home page for 10% off and when you sign up they email you coupons for like 13-15% off and the shipping always ends up being free with the discount. The local store by me charges a lot more for it.
