Redirected Aggression HELP!

I live in townhouse style apartments that have recently become over-run with stray cats despite recent allowances for dogs on the premises (both of my neighbors have dogs, but that isn't an issue - you would think that it would help this situation). I have two cats, one is about 3 years old, the other about 4 years old. When my 3 year old sees other cats outside (whether doors/windows are open or closed and only within the past few months), she goes crazy and will attack my 4 year old cat and/or myself and my fiance. This hasn't been a real big issue and was usually quickly resolved until recently when my 3 year old saw another stray outside. My cats have been fighting on and off for the past 3 weeks now! Everything will seem to be ok, then I will wake up at night hearing them scramble around the house yowling, hissing, and fighting. Everything I have read has told me to keep them separated for a while including food/bathroom facilities and then reintroduce them. This hasn't worked. I've tried using a spray bottle to break up fights, which works, but doesn't solve the issue. I've also tried rubbing a small washcloth on their faces to get the scent of each other on them while they are in a calm and cuddly state. None of these ideas have worked, so I basically took refuge in my bedroom and closed up all the doors so they were forced to spend time together (I read that might be a good option from someone that owned well over 45 cats in their lifetime!!), then I also tried using vanilla extract behind the ears once they were calm within each others presence. This definitely worked for a day, as they both wound up in bed with me this morning with no problems. Now, I've done lots of research the past few days because this issue needs to be resolved or I will have to get rid of my cat (she is my princess and I don't want to get rid of her, the other is my fiance's baby). I got new toys to play with and we spent time this morning playing and cuddling, I got to brush her long fur... Then she started hissing and growling at me and the other 4 year old cat again! This resulted in going out and buying a Feliway diffuser and a calming collar, as well as cat repellent for my back patio... It's been several hours now and my cat is still completely unapproachable. Their fights have gotten so bad that they will go to the bathroom in the midst of fighting! My 3 year old jumped/fell over an entire flight of stairs! Am I doing something wrong?? How long will it take for my kitty to return to her normal super cuddly self?? I am distraught... Like I said, it's been like this for weeks and I've had this pair of cats together for the past 3 years! Will the cat repellent work?? I've read many reviews for Feliway and they are majority excellent... I just don't know of any other options I have... HELP!

Oh no, how awful.

They are both fixed right? Springtime and cats that are not fixed is not a good mix. I think you're on to something with the strays though. I know my guy gets after my girl kitty when he is frustrated with cat(s) outside our house. It's a huge issue. The feliway can take weeks to work I've read. Use it twice a day no matter what. There is also (and I use these) treats that calm kitties. The brand I use is called "Pet Naturals" but I'm sure there is more than one brand. There is also liquid calming stuff you can put in their water bowl. What your kitty needs is something to take the anxiety away. My cats can always tell when someone is outside no matter what I do. Make sure you keep using the stuff to keep the strays away from your patio. Between all of those things, something should work. It may be time for a vet visit also. You want to be sure your kitty is not in distress from an illness.

Yes, both are females and fixed. Have been for years.

Treats and calming solution in the water is something I will definitely have to try!! Thanks for the advice - I'm willing to do whatever it will take!! They are my babies!!

It's just been so night and day with her - one minute she'll be fine, the next she is acting like a wild animal!! And she's never been like that!

Your girl needs a trip to the vet. Somethings not right with her. Do try the calming treats or the liquid. I believe the liquid is called "Rescue Remedy" and you can get it at a health food store or vitamin shop.

It would be awful for you to re-home your kitty when she may have a health issue that would explain all of this. Good luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

They both need a full vet check ASAP.

I commend you on all of your efforts. Rescue Remedy is wonderful. You might want to call your Vet for advice first and save a paid visit unless they request one.

We had the same issue with 2 males who had been together for 5+ years and all it took was a pregnant stray outside the window to destroy their relationship. After a year of efforts, we had to relocate one to a friends house.

I don't mean to discourage you at all. I hope your females react better to your efforts.
