Hi all,

I am confused. Someone clear me up please?

I am reading some canned food feeding recommendation per weight. Some says 5x canned food per day for a 16lb cat (my cat's weight).

that seems A LOT to me.

I feed 1 can a day, half in the morning and half at night, and even then, he does't eat it all. He takes a few bites and that's it. He mostly eats his dry food. Im still trying to find healthy food that he likes so he wouldn't waste food.

what is the average can feeding for a cat? How much do YOU feed your cat?

I am considering going back to Friskies since I know he enjoys that brand and would eat it all. Every other wet food so far he's been snubbing

If your cats do not act hungry, then what you are doing is fine

I feed my cats one 5 ounce can per day also, half of the can in the morning and half at night. My kitties eat the Trader Joe's Tuna for Cats and they love it - and I don't need to go to the pet store more often than I really must

It depends on the cat, just like people, they all have a differant metabolism. Nightmare (my only one left on all canned) eats 5-6 ounces a day.

Friskies Poultry Platter is actually, IMO, good for the price. I use Trader Joe's sometimes as well, though I avoid fish, because I don't think cats should be eating it except for as a rare treat. It is around $0.60 for a 5.5 ounce can.

Nightmare's current favorite is Natural Balance. I say current, because it changes as soon as I get more of his favorite kind

Just wondering, why shouldn't cats eat fish normally? Whenever I try feeding my cats food made with chicken or turkey (or anything other than fish), they have stomach problems...
(oh, and the Trader Joe's tuna food is 50 cents per can
)

Fish can contribute to urinary issues in cats. It can be especially problematic in males, who are more likely to develop complete urinary blockages.

Oh! Thank you for answering; I will try giving chicken or turkey food to my Mourek...

Well, the amount recommended depends on the calories per can, age, gender, activity level, and optimum weight of the cat. MOST of the time however, one can per day is the right amount. If you are feeding dry as well, however, you need to feed much less than what is recommended.

If you are worried about wasting food, buy a lid for the canned food and simply feed what is left the next day. ^^

Don't switch back to Friskies though, he likes it because it is junk food, not cause it's good for him. >__<

I feed right around 1 can per day. ^^

thanks for the responses

I do have a lid for the cans. What I mean by him wasting food is he doesn't eat all in the bowl. 2-3 bites and he ignores the rest which goes to waste

He's certainly NOT liking Wellness. Vet's Choice so far he'd tolerate, but not loving it, and he's not crazy about the Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul.

I don't think he likes Pate at all. I need to find something that's in chunks that's healthy.

You can try Petco's brand Soulistic or Weruva. Wellness pouches, and Natural Balance now makes pouches, too. There are others, but I can't think of them right now.

Below are all differant chunky/shredded types of canned food:

-Innova Flex
-Nature's Variety Homestyle
-Weruva
-SOME Merrick flavors (some are pate and some are chunks, check labels or experiment)
-Wellness POUCHES
-Blue Buffalo healthy Gourmet
-By Nature Goldleaf selects
-Soulistic (Petco "brand" which is I think actually made for them by Weruva)
-Natural Balance Pouches

Well, I see nothing wrong with putting the leftover food back in the can and then back in the refrigerator.

I'd be concerned that his spit would create bacteria.

I gave him some Soulistic.. he's hating it. I am getting annoyed that he's refusing to eat ANY wet foods that does not have meat by-products in it. I am getting tired of wasting money on food he refuses to eat.

IMO any wet food at all is better than no wet food. Mine do get "crummy" wet foods like Friskies, Fancy Feast, etc. I figure getting them to eat it it better than none at all.

You could put it in a separate container instead? It's no different than if you left it out for him to eat later. Except with the added bonus of being cooled.

I would not feed fish more than once a week to be safe, perhaps you could start with a food with fish oil or a fish way down on the ingredient list to start with. This might help wean them off of only fish!

Hiya, please read the ingredients declared on the food and extras you are feeding. Sugar is your enemy causing diabetes and the cat has not even taste buds for it. The more %meat the better. Please avoid pig meat, especially if raw, it might contain aujetzky(?)-virus and be fatal. Lookout for the amount of taurin contained. Cats need between 250-500mg daily, that would make 1-2gr in 4 days. In germany (omg) it seems that only the added taurin gets declared. So I don't get to know, how much is really there, having meat containing some by itself. But with taurin better be safe than sorry, it's essential.
Your high quality canned catfood does not contain wheat or a lot of other veggie protein. Greetings
