Sweet Magnolia ("Maggie")

Hi everyone...

I just learned that my parents chose to put down sweet little Maggie, Princess's sister.

Maggie had been sick a long time with some kind of skin disease. We tried several remedies suggested by the vet, but nothing ended up working. (I was in my teens when all this was happening so I don't remember most of the details about her diagnosis/treatment, etc.) She would lick herself until her skin was raw, and she had little boils that had pus, etc. in them - mostly on her underbelly. We could not pick her up and no one but me would pet her.

She seemed happy enough, though, always coming up to me to be loved, sleeping with the other cats, hunting, etc. My mom had been wanting to put her down for a long time but when I lived at home I always defended her.

After I moved out a few months ago they made the decision to put her down and just told me about this.

I feel sad to tell you this - it's not a choice I would make for my cats now - but they chose to shoot her. My parents live in the country and this is how they've put many of our pets down (I also just found out they put our old dog, Josie, down when she had leukemia - I thought she had died on her own).

I feel so sad for her because I don't know if she suffered or died instantly, or if she was scared and confused... I wish she had had a better life, and even though I know scientifically it's not likely that this is true, I hope she died knowing how much I loved her.

RIP Magnolia You are missed!

I am sorry for your loss. Maggie was loved and I'm sure she knew you cared for her. It sounds like your parents wanted to be kind and release Maggie from pain quickly. Alternatives are not available to everyone, and sometimes custom holds a lot of sway in rural areas.

You loved your Maggie - that's what counts.
