Hi guys,

Monday morning my girlfriend and I came home to find that our cat, Darling, had been vomiting quite a bit -- over the course of the evening, I think he did it about six or seven times. The first one was a hairball (he's a terrible shedder), but later on it was bile and then just white foam. He was still drinking, however. He also hadn't defecated that day. We were obviously concerned, and Stacey took him in to the vet first thing the next morning. They did an xray and decided that his intestines were really backed up -- they were concerned that he might have some sort of obstruction in his bowls. Well, they gave him an enema and some water for dehydration, and Stacey took him home. He was in a pretty rough way that night, so we took him in the next morning for an ultra sound to find out if he needed surgery.

They gave him the ultrasound and didn't find anything at all -- so it wasn't an obstruction, apparently. I took him home that night, and he seemed better -- they'd given him more fluids and force fed him with a syringe. I put out a bunch of food for him, and water, but he didn't seem interested in either. I took him in the next day for a check up, and the doctor said he looked pretty good -- he didn't have a fever, he was bright and perky, he was urinating, but he still wasn't eating. I brought him home and put out more food and water, and I gave him his favorite treats, which he happily ate, although I only gave him a few. The vet also gave us an IV bag with lactated ringers, an appetite stimulant and some antacids. We've been giving him the fluids in the mornings, and we've been force feeding him some i/d food, and he's been doing pretty well. But he still doesn't have any interest in food or water on his own. He'll walk over to the food (and we've put out about six or seven different kinds, from just straight tuna and chicken to different types of wet foods). He'll walk over, sniff them and maybe give them a lick, but no dice -- he doesn't want to eat or drink.

We fed him this morning after giving him fluids, and he immediately threw it up again -- that's the first time he's vomited since we ruled out intestinal blockage -- but there was a huge hairball in it, so I think that might have had something to do with it. The doc said to give him another antacid and then feed him again in the evening. He's seeming more lethargic this afternoon than he has in the last couple of days, though. He's also due for another appetite stimulant tomorrow.

Darling's six years old, neutered, a male, and big and strong. This is the first medical problem we've had with him since we adopted him from a woman who'd passed away last year.

So, I guess my question for you guys is, how long can we continue to do this? What's the likelihood of him recovering from this and starting to eat again? The vet said that if he hasn't started to eat by Monday, we should start to talk about either seeing a specialist (at great cost, presumably, and this has already cost about $1250), or talk about euthanasia, because she doubts that he'll start to eat again if he hasn't by now.

Anyone gone through this? Is there something we're not doing that we should be/doing that we shouldn't? What can we do to get our kitty back to health again? It's been a real rollercoaster ride, because I went from thinking that he was unlikely to live on Tuesday and Wednesday, to thinking it was only a matter of days before he was back up on his own on Thursday and Friday to feeling really defeated today. I love him, and I want to do what's best for him, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Aaron... Bluntly, you need another vet. Gotta love these vets... When they don't have an answer the first thing they throw out there is euthanasia

Your cat sound just like my cat Lucky when she was blocked from constipation and hairball - to the "T".
The fist thing we did was an enema, like you, but then maintenance. Pushing that hairball out will be the first thing you will have to do too - the one that is in her stomach. The enema gets rid of the poop, but not of the hairball... I used vaseline (unscented, 100% pure veseline)- For about four days when Lucky had this, 3cc a day, given through a syringe so she got it all. You can do more, even 2 times a day, but if you do, ask the vet.
Then, the vet put lucky on a hairball diet to prevent the issue. You can also give him canned pumpkin daily - but no other form of fiber.
Continue to force-feed. I think the food you are talking about is Hills a/d, right? Make sure to really force feed him - meaning, by the end of the day you want to have fed a 6oz can. You do that by not diluting the food, and using big syringes - I use 1/2oz syringes. and feed 1 1/2 oz per meal, 4 meals a day.
Go the the store and get a bunch of dry food. Yep - it is against all you learned - but it will get him eating. My vet wanted him on Hairball food, so I got 6-7 small bags of hairball foods, from low to high quality, and let her choose the one she liked. She Chose Purina Pro-Plan Hairball Control, and started eating on her own very soon, actually, as soon as I put it in front of her, and has been eating ever since.
Don't be discouraged, once he feels better, he will start eating again... Keep going

My advice would be to take the cat to another vet, too. I hope you are able nurse him back to health.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the thoughts -- we've been considering seeing another vet as well, so that's something we might look into more seriously now. Carolina, thank you for the suggestions as well -- we hadn't really considered different types of dry food, but we'll go and buy a couple this afternoon, since his treats are pretty much the only thing he shows an interest in eating oh his own.

Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron, make sure to get some low, medium and high quality dry food at the store... You can transition him back to a higher quality later - for now you just want him to eat.
Get Hairball controls - Try Purina One and Purina Pro Plan... Pro Plan in not that bad and was my girls favorite...
Kitties love junk food too! - Hope that works for you!

I wanted to drop a note back in here to thank you guys for your advice on this -- we tried the dried food suggestion and found one that he would start eating a bit at a time. One or two pieces, and then a little handful in our hands. We continued to force feed him and give him IV fluids, but pretty soon I woke up one night and he'd eaten a plate of wet food I'd put out just in case. Since then, we're totally off meds and force feeding and IV fluids. Darling is back to eating and drinking water again. It's been well over a week now, and he's playing and pretty much back to 100% normal! thank all of you for your advice and help, we really appreciate it!

I imagine when people post in the health forums, you sometimes don't hear how things turned out, so I thought I'd share the happy outcome of our own drama. Thanks again!

Here's Darling lounging recently on the pillow Stacey made for him. He's almost too big for it!

And oh my God......
May I say Darling is GORGEOUS!!!! By the way, what dry food did he like the best?
I am so so glad he is 100% back on his feet!!!! YEAH!!!!!!! Awesome!
Keep grooming him on a regular basis, and I would give him a dose of Vaseline a week just for precaution.... I have a tub always close by - Lucky starts coughing, I give her a dose and she is fine soon afterwards. Vaseline is a wonderful remedy! for a healthy healthy life for your boy for now on!
