Okay, no one here should be afraid to say how they feel, not all of us have the same opinions, that's why we have rules so WE CAN voice our opinions without starting a war.
I am a breeder, along with my wife. What got us into breeding??? Rescuing cats from a very bad breeder... There werent many of this particular breed worldwide, and we knew we could breed more genetically stable lines than the ones we rescued. We used to foster and socialize ferals, obviously we can't do that AND have a virus free cattery at the same time so we did stop doing that.
Instead, my wife is lucky enough to have a job where she has started a small rescue. The felines get spayed/neutered and adopted to good homes. We also still take in a rescue now and again, they become our lives... as all of our animals are.
Do we make money... sure we do.... does it pay for the way we breed and care for our purebreds... not even close, but that's okay, cuz hey... we sleep well at night.
Oh, I also happen to be a cat show judge and we do show our cats, and i've seen exactly what you're talking about, thankfully with the sheer numbers of people who show their cats, MOST people don't treat their cats like that..... are there snooty people in the cat fancy?, sure there is, but you can find just as many at the mall.
When has it become the fault of a breeder that shelter cats aren't being adopted??? Does anyone really think that an large number of people who would readily pay 1200+ (we don't charge nearly that) for a purebred, would decide to adopt if the breed they wanted was not available.... please
Okay so lets play devils advocate, let's decide not to breed anymore purebreds... done.
Now, how is that it's okay to run a breed into exctinction?? I dont get that part, as long as you rescue it's okay, nevermind the fact that you have, in some small way, by your beliefs, help to bring about extinction of an entire species.
There is no way anyone could be against ALL breeding of any animal.. if that were true, half the animals you look at in awe in this world would already be gone.
If you don't agree with breeding, good for you! Maybe you could help us ethical breeders to take down the kitten and puppy mills, as well as the breeders who aren't so ethical.
And lets applaud those rescuers who don't know when to quit, the collectors for all their work have done more harm than good.
Ill tell ya what, before ANY cat leaves our care, the people who do get our cats better have stepped foot in our home and cattery if they can..... If they don't care where their cat comes from then they don't get one from us. For those who live to far away, we do check references, and with their vet if they have one.
I've said this many times, if you have questions about breeding, please ask, become more educated, before you lump everyone into the same catagory.
