I finally got around to setting up my new printer. It arrived last week on Friday.

It only took me 4 hours!!!!
And I had to call my phone company and HP for help!!!

After 3 hours I finally called HP support and asked for their help!

One thing I can say about HP and it's why I will always recommend their products is because they have excellent customer support! The girl got me through the problem I was having and me being conscious of other people needing help I didn't want to keep her on the phone. So I told her that I would carry on and if I needed more help I would call back. She insisted that she wanted to help guide me through the whole process to set it up, and so she did. It took 41 minutes because I'm not the swiftest when it comes to setting up hardware. But she was very patient and explained things very well. And she made sure that I could print, scan, fax and receive faxes before our call ended.

I think I'm going to love my new printer. It prints super fast compared to my previous HP 2200 series printer. And the nice thing is that it's wireless. I can print from my laptop in my bedroom!

Wow! 4 hours! That was complicated! I do like HP printers, though, and recommend them, too (although I wouldn't buy an HP computer). I'm glad you were able to get good assistance from the HP people.

Actually, in hindsight it wasn't complicated at all. I'm just really dumb when it comes to setting up and installing hardware.

I managed to follow the quick start set up to get the printer cords plugged in, ink installed and a test sheet printed out. But the problem came when I was doing the CD install.

First I came to a part that wanted some kind of pass phrase. I had to call my cable company to ask them, only to have them tell me it's on the bottom of my modem. So once I got that entered into the printer, the CD install hung up because it couldn't find the printer on the wireless network despite the printer indicating it was connected to the wireless network. That hung me up the longest and it's the point where I finally caved and called HP.

With HP's help getting over that hump, it was just a matter of following instructions on the CD install windows.

The other part that had me confused was where to plug in the phone cords because I connect to an answering machine. But that turned out to be very simple too. Fax to phone wall outlet. Phone to answering machine. Answering machine to printer.

For someone who knew what they were doing, it would have taken them less than 30 minutes!

Ughhhh, I always hate the process of setting up things like that - totally not my strong point, either, and on top of that I'm not a very patient person and get frustrated too easily.
Sounds like you did WAY better than I would have, and I'm glad they were great about helping you out!
Always worth it in the end, though - your new printer sounds awesome!

Congrats!!

We have an HP wireless printer/scanner/copier that we bought when we moved into the house. Our old HP printer got 'injured' in the move somehow I guess, because it was bleeding ink. Luckily it just bled in the plastic bag in the box and not all over things.

I love that I can be in the kitchen doing homework on my laptop and print stuff from there. I don't like that the desktop has to be on in order for me to print from my laptop though. Not a huge deal, but I feel it's a waste of electricity to power up the desktop just so I can print. It's still a great printer and is working out quite well. Oh, except that once in a while it somehow loses its wireless connection and we have to reinstall it on the desktop. Not fun. But overall we're happy with it.

Strange. My desktop doesn't need to be on. The wireless comes from my DSL modem, not the CPU from the desktop. Are you sure you have your printer set up correctly? If it's truly a wireless set up, your desktop shouldn't have anything to do with the ability to print from another computer in your house.

My printer is plugged into the wall outlet and my telephone answering machine. There is no cable running from the printer to the DSL modem or the Desktop CPU.

Hmm... I don't know, I will check into how it's all set up. Because you're right, if it's wireless, then... it should be wireless and independent of PCs being on or not! I can be on the internet without the desktop being on, so yeah, the printer should work the same. I'll do some crawling around under the desk and whatnot, and if I can't figure it out, then I'll ask my BF to make it work!

What it sounds like to me is that you have it connected via USB to your desktop, and are sharing it on the network from there. The way I have mine set up (HP Photosmart C4795) is that it's not connected to any computer via USB, making it only available through the network connection.
