Hello! I'm new to the forum and want to say thanks for all the great info on this site! Hopefully someone can help with our situation.
We currently have two kitties; Smokey is a 3 year old neutered male and Misty is a 2 year old spayed female. They were both shelter kitties and they get along very well with each other. We usually put them in the bathroom to sleep at night when we go to bed; they sleep on the same bed, all snuggled up together, every night.
We are going to be getting a pair of new kittens this week; siblings from the same litter. They will be in their own safe room for as long as it takes to integrate them with the older cats. During the integration time, we planned on continuing putting the older cats in their "bedroom" at night. Once they are all free mingling well and the kittens are old enough to be out 24/7 safely, we are not sure what to do at night with them all. The bathroom is not big enough for all of them. We don't really have another place for the kittens to go at night, as the safety room for them is actually our guest bedroom and does get used fairly often for guests. Our thought was originally to let them all be out, 24/7, once we were sure they were all integrated well. Herein lies the issue.
Misty would be quite content to sleep with us at night, but Smokey walks around looking for us all night long if he is left out. He will wander the house and meow, and won't settle down on a bed with someone. He definitely seems to prefer the small, dark quiet space of the bathroom at night, but I don't know if he would do well alone in there, as he is used to Misty being in there with him. I also am not sure how the kittens will react to being able to have free run of the house.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle/how you've handled nighttime kitty meowing? Do you think it would be better to keep them all in a sleeping room at night or give them free run of the house? (once they've all safely integrated, of course) Any advice on how to handle a slightly neurotic kitty who really likes to know where his people are at all times?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
