Man gets 8 years for mutilating cat! Yay!

Hats off to San Antonio, Texas, for taking violence against animals seriously and punishing the perpetrator with something more than a slap on the wrist. I hope this is the start of a trend that will spread to the rest of the country.

SAN ANTONIO -- "Three years after he was arrested for cat mutilation, 21-year-old Austin Patterson was sentenced to eight years in prison.

"It doesn't always have a happy ending for the pet involved in cruelty cases, but at the very least, we can hold somebody accountable," said Animal Care Services Public Information Officer Lisa Norwood.

Yes, better late than never and here is the official link to "The Link" http://www.americanhumane.org/intera...-violence.html

71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims
Supposedly killers in another case (James Degorski and Juan Luna, convicted for killing 7 humans in the 1993 massacre at Brown's Chicken and Pasta in Palatine, Illinois) also tortured animals in Degorski's garage before they escalated their violence to the point of choosing human victims.

America needs to wake up and better understand this remarkable connection because it has plenty of data to back it up. Bless the folks who did the heartwrenching research.

Good for San Antonio!!! However, I think more needs to be done besides just putting someone in prision. I'm not familiar with this story, but Austin Patterson is really young so maybe he can get the kind of help he obviously needs while serving his sentence. Instead of eventually releasing someone who might injure a human next time, with luck they just might be able to release someone who will be a productive member of society.

The link is common sense IMO, as cruelty is cruelty, and animals simply make for a lower risk outlet.

Aside from those with actual medical conditions, 21 years old is plenty old to know exactly what and why you are doing something. Rehab isn't for everyone, but jail will at least keep them out of the population and hopefully provide sufficient intimidation to serve as a deterrent so they don't think they can get away with it again. In any case, glad the courts are finally taking this seriously and news of this will spread so the cruel monsters out there don't think they can just do whatever they want with no consequences as was the case in the past.
