New house problems

Hi everyone. This is my first post here, and I'm hoping someone can help us with a problem we're having with our youngest cat.

We moved into a new house last week. For the first five days we were here we had to keep both cats (Emric, aged 5, and Iestyn, aged 4) in our bedroom as we had contractors going in and out all day. Emric seems to have got used to the new room pretty quickly but Iestyn hid under the bed and remained there all week.

Today (Sat May 14) we left our bedroom door open to allow the kitties to explore their new home. Emric has had a look around the house but Iestyn will not come out from under the bed. We're sure he's eating but have no idea if he's using the litter box. He actually looks bigger, leading my wife and I to worry that he might be badly constipated.

One thing we have noticed - on the rare occasion he does poke his head out from under the bed, he looks up at the new ceiling fan and hides again. We're wondering if he's scared of it. It doesn't seem to matter if the fan is on or off.

I know that moving to new surroundings can be traumatising for cats, but as Iestyn's always been pretty adventurous we are getting very worried about him. We don't know if he's coming out at night. I've been working from home for the past week and have not seen him unless I get on the floor and look under the bed.

Tomorrow morning we're going to put his plate of food either away from the bed or in the kitchen in an attempt to make him come out of hiding.

Does anyone know if what Iestyn's doing is normal for a cat in new surroundings? Any advice would be appreciated. And I don't know if this is relevant, but last month we had to have our eldest cat, Madoc, put to sleep and we wonder if moving house on top of dealing with that has affected Iestyn badly.

I should also add that both cats are indoor kitties only, and aren't allowed outside.

Mine weren't that cautious (by a week they were masters of the whole home), but a friend of mine a while back had a cat that just had a really skittish personality and just really didn't like people... who knows, maybe it was weaned too early or the person that caught her was rough. Unfortunately, she was always skittish even years later and overly cautious about anything new like me coming over for example which would send her hiding. If that is a personality issue, no point in trying to rush it IMO as it would just make it worse, and you may just have to resign to the fact it may take a cautious kitty months to "live dangerously" and adventure out.

Usually what you hear recommended for nervous kitties is a product called Feliway. Haven't used it myself, but some swear by it.

Feliway is kind of expensive, but I agree that it is worth a try. We used it when we first adopted Daisy and it seemed to help calm her down a bit. IMHO, it probably is a combination of the new environment and the ceiling fan, even when it is turned off. Good luck and also it is nice to meet you.
