so one of my cats has a bit of brown discharge coming out of her eye. this happened last spring as well, and her health is fine. could this be allergies? it's the only symptom she's exhibiting and her vet check up in feb. was all systems go.

Check the nose, probably stuffy as well. I'm fairly confident you are right and its just seasonal allergies.
Eye-goop does usually mean its pretty bad. Wesley doesn't have the eye goop, but I did notice he's starting to get stuffy like I am. I did some major cleaning/dusting/vacuuming, bought some fresh HEPA filters for the central AC, and have two Rabbit Air BioGS purifiers on the way to hopefully eliminate the symptoms for all of us.
