i work for a credit union and so of course i am in a union.
i started out as a part timer working 6 days a week and only getting sundays off (although those were only 5 hour shifts a day..i still had to be there EVERY day so it got old really quick).
i have been full time for 6 months now, and moving to full time meant i would rotate saturdays and with 4 other f/t employees we should each work about 2 weekends a month. when we work a weekend we get a half day during the week (come in late or leave early) to make sure that we dont get overtime. i thought this sounded like a great deal!
well thanks to the union and "seniority" (which i think is absolute BS) i only get 1 weekend off a month and everyone else rotates. i also dont get to choose the days i want my half days on and whether or not i want to leave early or come in late...its decided for me (even though my boss emails me to ask what day i would like to take and when i tell her she says no only such and such day is available...so why even ask?).
i do have seniority over another full timer and she just happens to be our lead teller (not a supervisory position, just means more work like reports and disputes) and yet somehow even she gets "seniority" over me...hows that work!?
i dont know a TON about unions, this is the 2nd ive been in and my dad was the lead negotiator between ameren and its unions in for about 10 years, so i do understand most of it. i get the importance of seniority but when it comes to scheduling i dont think that seniority should matter. if we rotate saturdays...we rotate saturdays. its very frustrating. i really wish we werent union.
maybe someone can clue me in so i get it better...
