Ok, I was in town last week, happened to turn onto another street, when I
saw what I thought to be a squirrel sitting on it's hine legs, I took a second look, it was a baby kitten, up on his front legs, trying so hard to get out of the rode, dragging his back legs! It was the saddest site I think I have
experienced! I jumped out of my car, door wide open, car running, and tried talking softly to him, as he was still fighting to get away from me, scared to death! long story short, I got the kitten, ran in the furniture store, screaming
for help, I know the guy who runs the store, he of course comes running and loads me and kitten back in my car, and straight to the vet we go.
Bruised spinal cord, not broken, got a steroid shot, and had hopes of it gaining its use of it's legs back. Next day the vet comes in and says he
hadn' t seen any change and it would be best to PTS! I am not good in that
situation, CANNOT HANDLE IT AT ALL! I broke and ran, feeling just horrible!
So spending the next days grieving that precious doll, not being able to drive
by the street where I found him, and could not go by the vet clinic, I was
sick about it!
Last Friday my phone rings, it's the vet's office, seems that the day he was
going to PTS the kitten, he got busy and didn't , the staff, came to work the
next day, checked on the kitten and he was up walking around! so guess who
I have in my bathroom as I write this, uh huh!!! Troop or Trooper, is his name
the vet believed he had been mulled by a dog, cause there was dried saliva
all over his tiny body! Lord knows how, he survived so he is a little Trooper!
Anyway here is my problem, he obviously wasn't around mom long enough to learn proper using the bathroom skills, all kittens I have ever had have taken
right to a litterbox, no problem, except one, who was taken to young to learn the skills, that cat still doesn't cover any of her stuff in the litterbox!
Troop, did #2 under my bed, and I put him in my bathroom with litterbox,
set him in it, scratched his paws around in it, but he hasn't a clue, I came
back a few minutes later and he had TEE TEEd on my rug in there right beside
the box! I haven' t introduced him to my other older 5 cats, just because , and they all use the bathroom outside, so until he meets them and all of that
they can't even show him what to do! So what and how do I deal with this???
Please help!!! Sorry it was so long! Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Monique - OMG what a story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for rescuing this baby!

BTW - please let me know how you're doing and whatever happened.... ???????

As to the litterbox.... part of it may be that he doesn't know litter is ... litter.

I'd pick up all the rugs from the bathroom, and keep him in there until he's reliably using the box.

He's probably not used to peeing and pooping in the same place, so you may want to add a second box (he's a kitten, right? He doesn't need large boxes?).

I'd get some potting soil (no fertilizer in it) and put an inch thick layer over the top of the litter.
This he may recognize. We just put out mulch in the garden (you know those wood chips), and the ferals love it - so that's something else you could try. The point is to use stuff he might recognize, you know?

The other thing you can do is if there's anywhere to purchase it around you (just call around), is use the Dr. Elsley's Kitten Attract litter. It's more expensive than regular litter, but it smells like "earth" or grass or something.

Please keep us posted!

Wow, what a story is right. God bless you for finding the kit! An angel was on the kitten's side to cause the vet to put off the PTS phase!

I am sure he'd have a wonderful home with you! He just needs to learn the routine and what's right/wrong. I bet he never been in a house before

What a story!

He is probably a child of a feral mom, herself a survivor. Thus, he is probably more though than most home raised kittens. that is why, the vet with his experience of home cats, though it was time for the last help.
But it was enough with a little more time.

Perhaps the vet or some coworker wanted to be kind and gave some pain-killer during the time while you though this over? And this did the trick. The pain killer tood away the stress, and made healing possible.

I remember the old british vet Herriot in one of his stories told something almost like this. He had one visit to this farmer. On his way out, he saw in a corner a dying lamb, leaved there to die by his own. The farmer didnt wanted to pay for any try for healing nor pts... But Herriot, out of sheer pity, did gave the dying a big dosage of pain killer he had on him, while the farmer was washing his hands. Herriot wanted only to make the last hours easier for this lamb. But. This lamb survived and was well a couple of weeks after! Probably because without the stress of the pain, he got the strengh to heal himself.
After it, Herriot used this trick a couple more times in hopeless cases, where nothing else worked. Big dosages of a pain killer, not big enough to killl, but they were in sleep perhaps 2 days. And did awake healthy.

About the litter. You had already got good advices. dont use any fancy litters. Common, classical cat sand of clay. Or even - do mix in some soil...

Good luck!

That is a miracle story if I ever heard one. Trooper was meant to be saved and to live on!!! Just an amazing story
. I would also keep him in a small confined space like your bathroom. Like Laurie said, take up everything off the floor and add another small litter box with the kitten attract litter. There is also an herbal Cat Attract additive. Add about one quarter of the bottle to that litter as well. Bless your heart for taking in this angel
. You are an angel too
it is so great the kitten survived his ordeal

You're an Angel for saving this baby!

First, make sure the sides of the litter box aren't too high for him to get into easily. You might want to get some shallow disposable aluminum cookie sheets to use until he gets bigger.

Second, sprinkle litter over his messes, sweep it all up and put it in the litter box, so he knows what the litter is for. That usually is all that is needed for even the dimmest of kittens to get the concept.

You were in the right place at the right time to save this baby. Angels at work again.

LDG ...Thanks for all of the info! I haven't had a kitten in awhile, especially one that the mom
didn't get to show them the important things that cats do and how they handle it!!
As long as he is in the bathroom, with box, he uses it. I do need to set up more boxes
around my house! thanks so much, you are such a great friend! You always make time for me!!! love ya!!!!

Thank you also!
I was thinking..(about the PTS) how often does that happen....when the vet gets too busy to do that! It was fate! and that loving little soul is so full of life, and so thankful!!!

I don't know about being an angel? I didn't do anything that anyone one of us would have done in the same situation! But I thank you for the compliment!
They said at the vets office, if I didn't want him,
they would try to find him a home.. well in my own mind I thought,
I don't trust anyone to take care of him, like I would!! I sometimes think
having such a heart, is dangerous to one's health!!
if you know what I mean?
