"Wet houses" vs. detox centers?

A safe place to drink, or just giving up?

Quote:
  • Homeless alcoholics can drink on the premises of St. Anthony Residence in Minnesota
  • Supporters say these so-called wet houses provide a safe place and save taxpayer money
  • Those opposed, mostly addiction counselors, believe the model gives up on a treatable disease
I've got to admit that I've only recently read of the existence of such "wet houses" and have mixed feelings about them, having known people who've unsuccessfully gone through detox scores of times or who literally drank themselves to death, as well as ones who've stayed "dry" for decades, with or without treatment/support groups.

What do you think? Is too much emphasis being put on saving money, or is this a way of showing compassion for the (mortally?) ill? Would it work for illegal drug addicts?

All too often, the hot button phrase of "saving money" is simply an excuse to get the "undesirables" out of sight, and therefore, out of mind. Putting them up and giving them drinking money hardly seems as though it could possibly be a money saving venture.

wow...I don't know what to think of this concept.
Is there such a thing as a "safe" place or alcoholics to drink? Being a recovering alcoholic myself; there were so many times I felt hopeless and helpless. A place such as this would have allowed me to drink myself to death, which I wanted to do so many times. It seems like a tragic way of disposing people who may be a burden on society, but who, in fact, suffer from a real disease. There's no "cure" for alcoholism, but there is recovering. Where there's life there's hope. I don't think there'd be any in a place like that.

If private charities want to hand out alcohol to people that are of legal age and responsible for their own life choices, by all means, have at it.

But that this is partly funded by government is absolute nonsense and I would not stand for it in my state. The government has no right to demand tax money from its citizens to invest in dealing drugs. That is something that citizens should make a personal judgement call as individuals and either donate or not donate to the charity based on their own convictions, not forced to by law with such a controversial program. For myself, I am sticking with charities like CAPS and the Red Cross, and wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.
