Yesterday I noticed my kitten had something stuck in her hair on the back of her neck, right where she can't get to it to groom. It's extremely sticky and has since hardened into her fur. It looks and feels like dried glue, but I can't for the life of me imagine where or how she got it from. I tried cutting as close as I could to her skin, but it's matted right to the skin and I'm afraid if I go any further I'll risk cutting her. I've tried loosening the substance with oil and picking at it with a fine-toothed comb, but nothing seems to help. I thought about shaving the patch off, but I'm afraid I'll cut her.
I don't know what to do at this point. Any ideas on loosening/getting the sticky stuff out? She has a vet appointment in a few days, and I'll for sure ask him about it when I take her, but until then I'd like to do whatever I can to loosen it up.
It doesn't seem to irritate her or bother her, and like I said she can't lick at it... so there is no risk for her to ingest it.

The vet can take care of the mysterious substance for your kitten.
