Hi,
I'm a new cat owner. I adopted my little guy on 04.30.11 and the folks at the adoption agency recommended Purina Pro Plan. I got him the salmon flavor. I also bought a bag of fancy feast dry but was told since protein isn't the first ingredient that it might not be good for him. Anyways, he seems BORED with his food. I started buying him the fancy feast appetizers, subbing it as one of his meals a day and he loves those. Is this ok? Should I be doing more of a wet/dry mix? Since they had him on dry, I stuck with dry... I've also heard that the wet makes their stool more runny?

Also, he was into the treats initially and now he smells them and moves on. I loveeeeeee this little guy though. So whatever is best for him, I'm willing to do.

Food recommendations from shelters and vets aren't always (or even usually) your best option. It was recommended to me that Holland be fed Science Diet, which is really not all that great. They recommend those foods because they get deals from the companies

Unfortunately, because I was unemployed for a period of time, I fed Holland Friskies (wet & dry) for quite a while. Now that I have a job I want to get her on a better brand, but she turns up her nose. I've been mixing the Friskies & high quality and sometimes I can get her to eat it. The problem you will have with Fancy Feast is that it is NOT a high quality food, but it is addictive to most kitties...
The longer you give it to him the harder it'll be for him to quit.

Others here will have better ideas of what are the best brands of wet & dry food, but I know that Blue Buffalo and Wellness are supposed to be good, high quality.

Wet vs. dry - a lot of opinions out there. I feed Holland wet in the morning and evening, and she gets a quarter cup of dry food to eat as she wants during the day. Usually she doesn't eat it all. I have never had a problem with runny stools, even with the Friskies, and by feeding wet food you will be more assured that he's getting enough water. Holland will drink water from my tap and out of my sink, but I've never seen her even TOUCH her water bowl...
But wet food provides much of the moisture the cat needs.

I'm sure more people will jump in with better advice. Congratulations on your new addition, and welcome to TCS!

By 'little guy', do you mean a kitten? If so, he really should be getting kitten food which is higher in protein than regular cat food.

If not, depending on which of these three you are feeding, my answer will be different. http://www.petfooddirect.com/Brand/P...0Source/salmon
But since all of these foods contain soy, I wouldn't recommend any of them; it can cause hyperthyroidism in cats.

Like Mystik said, Fancy Feast and Friskies are both foods that cats can become addicted to very easily, so I wouldn't recommend those either.

Wet/dry mix is much better than dry only. Cats fed dry only don't get enough water and usually end up with kidney disease and urinary issues.
Wet does not cause their stool to be more runny or cause their teeth to rot. Those are both rumors.

Evo, Before Grain, Wellness, Natural Balance, Weruva and many others are very good choices.
